Hi Everyone,

I have an early 2000's Hot Rod Deluxe. Recently, when I play loudly, the volume starts to cut in and cut out. When I play around with the volume pot, the volume does not change and then all of a sudden, it jumps back to where it should be. When I do this and look at the tubes, the tubes turn bright blue when it swells. The sound typically returns back to normal and then starts to cut in and out again.

I'm thinking this is a bad volume pot. Does this make sense or does it sound like something else?

Thanks!

Which tubes are turning blue?

You may have a bad volume pot, but a bad volume pot will not cause tubes to turn blue. These amps are known to have faulty solder joints. Might want to check and reflow the solder joints for all the tubes.

Thanks Bill. It's the power amp tubes that are turning blue. They are only turning blue when the volume surges after it kicks back in. Then they go back to normal.

Check and reflow the solder connections.

I agree, most likely poor solder joint(s). If both output tubes are affected, look for connections that are common to both, such as where the red wire from the OT primary connects to the board (it seems as if you are losing the B+). It's a good idea to closely inspect all joints though, which means pulling the main board. Some tubes can have a blue glow when the B+ is supplied to them, and the blue glow can fluctuate with volume/playing. Some tubes can have a strong blue and some can be faint. Most will have the orange glow from the heater.
