Has anyone had this problem:
I'm trying to replace the EL84s in my Blues Junior, but the aluminum bracket (that seems to be a heat sink), seems to be glued to the top of the tubes. There appears to be some kind of black material burned on that's preventing me from taking the tubes off the metal. I've gotten he tubes out of the amp, but can't get them to separate from the aluminum.
- Any how to ideas?
- Do I need the aluminum piece or Can I just put the new tubes into the amp without the bracket?
Mike

That is a tube clamp that holds the tubes in place. Leave it off and the tubes may eventually vibrate loose and fall into the bottom of the amp, potentially damaging the tube and amp. It is probably just foam or a light adhesive used to damp vibrations and should easily separate from the tubes.

Yep with a bit of twisting and pulling I finally got them to release from the holder. I can't tell what the gunk holding them on was, but I sanded it off the bracket and I now have the new tubes in place.
thanks.

Fender started using these rubber grommets in the holes of the tube retainer, presumably to prevent rattling of the retainer on the tubes. I've considered adding the grommets to my BJr, but wondered if the things would melt with use....now I know not to add them. If the tube retainer also serves as a heat sink, the rubber grommet would prevent heat transfer from the tubes. Apparently the grommets are a bad idea.

Yep, I'll bet that's exactly what it was; those little black grommets. I guess they didn't test them thoroughly because, apparently, they melt.
