Micing is much better to me anyway. It will get a nice even sound for the front of house. My favorite mic for Fender style amps is the Senhieser e906. Destroys the SM57.

It alls depends on what you're playing, how you set either amp up, whether you are die hard tube fan, and other tconsiderations. There are no die hard rules. Generally, amps are mic'd to keep a lower volume on stage and/or to get smaller wattage tube amp breakup into the PA mains if you aren't so loud that you're using high watt amps.

The Sennheiser is a very nice mic and I highly recommend it. BUT, it does not "destroy" the SM57 which has been the industry standard since dinosaurs. The mic DOES make a difference....you will need one of these two.

I also have a 57 and to me for clean/rock/blues tones the e906 is great. The 57 only works well for more marshall sounds.

My guitar teacher gave me this to help me record practice sessions with my amplifier (I use Logic as my DAW):

http://www.shure.com/stellent/groups/pu ... dio_ea.pdf

It has some useful tips on where to place your microphone for different tonal characteristics.

:D The best thing about micing or going direct to a board is that you can control the sound level of the amp. This lets you keep a nice kleen sound or get as dirty as you want without distorting the amp.
