No. As with the VK, the TR has only one tap on the OT, and no switch on the external speaker jack. Anticipating your next question, plugging one speaker into each jack would be exactly the same as having the speakers connected together as they are from the factory, except that then you couldn't plug in additional speakers to the external jack.

I agree with BMW2002Ti about using lower gain tubes.

Absolute and unequivocal  ...

Really? I have no frame of reference but had read in a few places they were designed to sound similar. I have to be honest, after playing around on it all morning it sounds just fine using the stock Jensen and I'll probably just leave it be...

One of these days I'll try to get a handle on just leaving things well enough alone  yeah right! Anyhow, here's a nearly unbearably out of focus video of the amp as it sounds now... Vol 4, Treb 5, Mid 7, Bass 4, and Verb 4. Not sure why my camera didn't focus... user error no doubt :)

The people writing that pap are the same sheisters trying to sell you those "they-sound-just-like-a-JBL" pieces of crap. And as much as I respected Ted Weber for his work, I lump him into that same crowd. His "California" series sound nothing like a D- or K-series JBL. And yes -- I've A/B'ed them side by side using the same amps, same settings, same guitar. The only speaker that sounds like a JBL is a JBL. Statements to the contrary are pure marketing hype.

Good to know... and honestly, I'm not too surprised to hear it. So much of everything is marketing hype... pickups, speakers, amps, and all the rest of it. I guess it boils down to personal preference. The proof is in the pudding!

As I'm sure many of you know, I've a raving lunatic for all things Jerry Garcia and know that he used them (JBL's) in his cabinets, as has Steve Kimock. I'll probably never nail either of their tones but it's a funny hobby chasing after them. Maybe if I chop off a finger...

The JBL's are out there if you know where to look.

(at least the ones that haven't been bought up by gear sluts like me)

I've seen some on FleaBay... lots of the Orange Fender ones but also some of the gray JBLS... I honestly don't know the differences between all the models, and the ones Kimock has raved about are another model, entirely different than the ones Jerry used. Kimock has mentioned the JBL 130's in various blogs and articles, and I know Jerry used the JBL D120's. I don't know how they all stack up but I do know that I really like the tone both of them have... now, I understand that they were both using different amps, Twins, Dumbles, Two-Rocks, and I'm sure that figures into the equation too.

For a Twin,Twin Reverb, or any other vintage 2 x 12 Fender Amp, this is all you need to know......

Orange frame or gray, it doesn't matter.

And what's the scoop with reconed speakers because I see a bunch of those? I suppose they're only as good as the recone job, but would they pass muster in comparison to an all original speaker? Thanks for sharing your knowledge on the JBL's... I've never really gotten to into researching them (or speakers at all) very much. I've only ever bought one replacement speaker, the Eminence Cannabis Rex that's in the custom cab I refinished. I like it just fine but I know there's dozens of quality speaker choices out there. Also, what are your thoughts about running just one of these speakers in the half-power configuration I'm running now?

And now I'm working on number two...

Not the same for the VK, it has only one tap on the OT, and the external speaker jack has no switch. For the VK, plug in an external speaker along with the internal for an impedance mismatch, but that's a different ballgame as you now have an extra speaker connected. You can change the speakers connected to the amp, using different impedance speakers. A good practice for a tube amp is to keep the impedance mismatch to a 2 to 1 ratio, either high or low. I usually find that half of the speaker impedance sounds better than twice the speaker impedance. Sometimes, but not always, a matched impedance sounds best.

Thanks

I will never buy a recone speaker without knowing who recone it and what material. There are not many people do/ can recone like original speaker was.

If not sure I will buy a new speaker .
