Hi there,
a friend handed me this amp (it is about 5 years old) for service. The problem is that it utters occasional sreeches and rumbles (very loud). These can not be triggered by jolting the amp or (carefully) pinging the tubes. It also happens with volume Knobs dialed "0". After a first check, all tubes seem to be o.k., and there are no bad soldering spots or so. I do not like errors where the problem occurs only occasionally, these are always difficult to detect. Much easier if the malfunction happens permanently. One thing that appeared to me is that there is some brown, brittle stuff on all three 500V/22uF capacitors (C32, C33, C34), in the area where the "+" wire comes out of the cap (the stuff is around the wire for about 3-4 mm lenght, the layer is conical shaped and gets thicker towards the housing of the cap). This might be an indication of temporal failure of the caps, but could as well be a remain of sloppy manufacturing (although I have seen a lot of caps in my life already, but never something like this). Does anyone have a suggestion for this ?

Thanks, Heinrich

Any way you can post some pics of the caps to see what you're seeing?
