Hello fellow enthusiasts,
I recently tried a death metal digitech pedal on my Frontman 212R and the next day when I tried playing directly to the amp, a hissing (like chewing!) sound appeared and then it went away from time to time.

Info:the cable is a cheap one.I tried two guitars and both inputs.

Help! :?:

hmm I don't know for sure but first try a different cable and plugging into a different wall outlet and check the speaker wires.

Voltage spikes can sometimes fry the switching transistors in these amps. Look for the J111's on the schematic.

And what, pray tell, is the OP supposed to check them (I count at least 5) for, and how is he supposed to check them?

If trying a different cable shows the same results, unless you are an expert at solid state amp repair and have all the proper tools for troubleshooting, I suggest you do yourself a favor and take the amp to a quailified amp technician for evaluation and repair.

 good point, though I imagine by posting to an internet forum he was expecting to get a few half-baked ideas thrown at him.

Another thing to try might be plugging the guitar into the "PWR IN" jack to see if the sound goes away.

When it comes to high voltage, "half-baked ideas" get a lot of people killed.

Well, fortunately we are only talking about a Frontman 212R with +/- 42 VDC. It may not kill you, but it will get your attention.

woah woah woah. Safety squad sanctimony dudes. I just said could be some transistors; look at the schematic. If someone gets killed looking at a schematic come and sue me.

I suggest that you read some of the threads here written by the people who know and understand amp troubleshooting and repair. You are definitely not one of those people.

I suggest you withhold your "take it to a tech" tips in the future. They're pointless. OP knew before he ever met you that he could take his broken amp to the amp repairman. He's asking "What's up with my amp?" and you're like this boring monotone robot, "Take it to a tech, wah wah wah." Nothing bad is happening here. Just relax.

Looks like we got a new "bench boss" here, Bill.

I suggest you kneel and kiss his ring lest you find yourself removed from yet another Christmas-card list.

OK... back to the original post. I believe these amps have their jacks soldered to the circuit board. You may have caused a solder point to break or become hinky with that one session using the pedal. Just a co-in-kee-dink.

Put a guitar patch cord into the jack and wiggle it GENTLY. Static?

They are (At least they are on my Frontman 25R, so I assume the "family" shares similar build technique). The OP noted that he "tried two guitars and both inputs". So unless he damaged BOTH input jacks, my vote goes to the "cheap" cable.

Of course, plugging anything related to "death metal" into an amp is cause for concern about the amp.
