Since the price tag for a good tube amp is way outside of my budget, I was researching several tube amp kit suppliers on the web. Although I currently work at a desk, my background includes many years in the electronics field so, there is no kit out of my league, as far as soldering, assembling and such.

Have any of you any experience with any of these tube amp kit companies? Or, would it be better to just obtain a schematic and acquire all the parts the hard way?

I played a couple Mission 5e3 kits and several Allen amp kits. Awesome stuff. I never built one myself, but a friend of mine has and said it's not that big a deal if you have decent soldering experience.

Yeah, I was looking at the Mission amps. They look like very good quality and made in America. Allen looks to be comparable in quality and price.

Mission and Allen are at the top of the list quality-wise. Weber kits are relatively inexpensive, but some of the components are cheap, especially jacks and filter caps, and should be replaced with better stuff. The Weber kits don't come with instructions, just a layout diagram--they expect you to know what you're doing with construction techniques.

All the other kit vendors fall somewhere between these. Ceriatone and Watts are worth a look, but in terms of quality and support, you've started at the top.

Hello Warpfield and All

My hat goes off tho you fellas who can
build and amp. :D

I can wire a pickguard, but when I see
the inside of a hand wired amp, along with
the fear of electrocuting myself. :(

It's a great skill I hope my kids pick up
more than I did.

Cheers.

Its no problem. Just when you get ready to actually fire it up, its a good idea to have the unit plugged into some sort of GFCI circuit so you don't burn your house down.
