Thanks guys! The question I didn't ask has been successfully answered! :D :D :D

There is one thing Bluesky636 brought up which I had not considered: "... leaving it on continuously will run up your electric bill." I looked up some formulas, read the HRD spec sheet, did some math, considered what I just paid to The Tube Depot for 3 pre-amp tubes, and concluded that I'm not going to worry too much about the power consumption.

Just for grins and giggles, and since math is not my area of expertise, I would appreciate it if someone would double check my calculations to confirm or deny, as the case may be.

    HRD Power Requirement = 180W (spec sheet from the manual)
    Time = 12 hours (i.e. 43,200 seconds)
    Energy Consumption = Power Requirement x Time = 7,776,000 joules
    kWh = Energy Consumption / joules per kWh = 7,776,000 / 3,600,000 = 2.16 kWh
    Average cost per kWh in the US = $0.1333 (http://www.bls.gov/ro9/cpilosa_energy.htm)

So leaving the HRD on for 12 hours a day costs about 29-cents.

Thanks and Cheers!
BM

Well, I didn't say it would run it up a lot. :lol: :lol: :lol:

Going further, on an annual basis, that would be in increase of about $106 dollars. My average monthly electric bill is about $150/month, so that adds almost a month to my bill. When I have both my BDRI and 5F6A clone cranking in my 20'x18' studio, the temperature in the room can go up by 3 to 5 degrees. Great in the winter, not so in the summer. :lol:

Keep in mind that the 180 watts would be with the amp turned up fully and playing it the whole time. When not playing, or playing at lower volume, it would be somewhat less.

For comparison, in Indiana at .06 per kilowatt hour (I think), 180W x 12 hrs = 2160 watt-hours per day........ (2160/1000)x .06 = .13 cost per day..... .13 x 365 = 47.45 cost per year ....

Roughly less than $50 per year to use the amp at full blast for 12 hours per day, every day. I understand real power vs apparent power, but the electric company doesn't charge the same for residential and business, it's still close. Nothing really.

And, as bluesky636 pointed out, in the winter you would save a little on the heating bill. :)

Shimmilou, at $0.06 per KWh I think some people will start considering a move to Indiana! :wink: The folks out in California are paying close to $0.20 / kWh with the national average at around $0.13.

I wish I had a 20'x18' studio. :mrgreen: I looked up the specs of the BDRI and it has the same 180 W power requirement as my HRD, so I'm thinking that your 5F6A clone must be a very powerful animal. No way to convert this into a cooling system for the summer? :)

He'll need it for heat mighty soon.

It gets downright nippy in Virginia come winter time.

The studio used to be the roof over our 2-car garage. :lol:

We added it on a number of years ago along with a black & white darkroom when I was doing large format landscape photography.

The 5F6A is also about 180 watts (40 watt power output). Add the two amps together and it gets cozy. :D

With hurricane Sandy about to move through Northern Virginia, its getting chilly already, as well as windy and wet. Not looking forward to the next few days. We have our fingers crossed we don't lose power.

Stay safe and dry, Bill.

I hope you have a generator and some fuel stockpiled.

So far the wind is not bad, but the rain is pretty heavy.
