Howdy. This is a video I made for something that I think samples the line out tone of the Greta well. It's a strat through a EHX memory toy into Greta lined out into a tech 21 power engine 60. Greta volume is about 2/10. Tone on full. PE60 at about 2/10. Even that was really loud. It overloaded the iPhone mic at the bridge section of the song. I jammed the other night with some friends and I used this setup and I was easily able to keep up with a very loud drum and bass with plenty of volume still to use.
Cheers

I noticed that the schematic lists "40% THD at 1.15 watts, 5% THD at .4 watts". That's with a 12AX7 in V1 and a 12AT7 in V2. Have you thought about trying some different tubes for a cleaner sound, such as a 5751, or even a 12AT7 in V1? It would be relatively easy and cheap to try a few different tubes. I also wonder what affect a 5751 or 12AX7 in V2 would have, more distortion? Swapping the two tubes around might be an interesting start.

I haven't thought about that at all yet. The things got crazy distortion and very little clean tone though. My first swap would probably be to gain more clean tone. I know absolutely nothing about how switching tubes affects sound so I'd have to look into that. Is there a chance of damaging the amp by swapping tubes?

As long as you unplug the amp from electricity, wait for tubes to cool before removing, be sure to properly align the tube pins when installing, and use gentle but firm pressure, no problem at all. The tube socket might have some resistance to pulling the tube out, which is normal, just use a very slight circular motion when removing. Just hold the amp down with one hand and pull the tube out of the socket with the other hand, and note the gap between the pins on the bottom of the tube so that you can install another tube and align the tube pins gap to the space in the socket, and make sure that the new tube is fully seated in the socket without using too much force. No biasing required, and any similar type and brand of tube will work, such as 7025, 12AX7, 5751, 12AT7, 12AY7, 12AV7, 12AU7, or the equivalent European designations such as, ECC83, ECC803, etc. Different brands, even of the same type, might sound different from one another and have slight gain differences. For example, an Electro-Harmonix 12AX7 might sound brighter and clearer than a Sovtek 12AX7.

Here is a handy guide for the gain factor of tubes (link below), the lower gain tubes typically give a cleaner sound, sometimes warmer and fuller sound depending on the position in the amp. The Greta uses the 12AX7 (V1) as the preamp and the 12AT7 (V2) as the output, so I suspect that a lower gain tube in V1 would give a cleaner sound at higher volumes. You can try any number of combinations, and since you have those two in the amp, maybe a 5751 and a 12AY7 would give you four different tubes to experiment with.

Hey right on man!! I checked out that website and there was a lot of good info there as well. Ill def make some recordings and/or vids when I get some different tubes so the comparisons can be observed. The Greta has to be one of the simplest amps to do this with so thanks for the info and tips!
Cheers

Yeah, I like the amp, but if you can get more clean volume it would be better. Anxious to hear the difference. :)

Hey guys!

How did you fare with the tube swapping?

Been swapping tubes in the Greta since I first got it.
That's the great thing with preamp tubes, no need for biasing, just mix'n'match as you please.

I ended up with my favourite being 2 x 12AX7 for higher saturation at lower volumes. But I have tried plenty more combinations. a 12AU7 makes it sound really dark. With a high gain 12AX7 in the front and a cab that can move air you can achieve metal type sounds as well. (Luckily, I'm just aiming for the blues and rock).
