Whatever the motivation, it surely escapes me as well. "Back in the day", the OEM speaker for a Deluxe Reverb was a 30-watt driver from Jensen, Oxford, or Utah.

So Arjay.... a Weber 12F150 would work nicely in my DRRI? Do you have any other suggestions (speaker wise)

Weber's 12A150 or 12F150 would be a fine choice IMO.

I have a JBL D120F in mine. Make of that what you will.

I use a DRRI on about 2-2 1/2 with both a Visual Sound Route 66 and Jekyll and Hyde. I can play in a way that the kids can watch cartoons in the next room.

My question is this, can you not set the amp volume at 5 and control the guitar volume? Or is the expectation that the guitar volume is always at max?

For example, with amp volume at 5, is the "sound" the same with guitar volume at 5 or at 10 other than the volume? or am I missing something?

Here's how I play thru my DR... the vol on the amp is never below 6, when playing a Strat, around 3 with my 335. With a Strat I keep the volume between 7-8, I get the perfect combination of clean/driven/overall volume. Once passed 8 on the Strat things get a little crazy :D

I experimented with a lot of pickups, tubes and speakers, I know what works for me. I can play my Strat+DR at extremely low volumes, using both volumes on amp and guitar, it always sounds wonderful and never "thin". Crappy speakers, tubes, and pickups will not yield the same results. So, I'm not saying you'll be to accomplish the same thing with what you have, but with a little experimenting you'll get there and you'll always have that big grin when you pick up your guitar and plug in :) unfortunately this doesn't happen overnight.

Please excuse my ignorance as it knows no bounds; but:
What the heck is a fender DDRl or DDR1????
I have gone to GC's and Fender's websites and searched their amps for a Fender DDRl and the searches yield no returns.

It's actual name is '65 Deluxe Reverb & it's from the Vintage Reissue series amplifiers, hence Deluxe Reverb Reissue= DRRI.
Just click on the smilies.

I was on the same boat as you,
Now I'm on the forum requesting some assistance on my DRRI because of some unwanted feedback with my reverb tank.

I believe I can help you out with this since I've spent mucho $$$$ on pedals the last five months to get a respectable overdrive for situations where I can't crank up my Fender amps

BEST pedal for blackface overdrive: Wampler Black '65

This pedal is amazing I didn't want to like it at first because I got Serious GAS and bought five boutique pedals online in one day plus another 7 two weeks prior. I wanted to find a flaw in this pedal that would allow me to exchange this pedal for another one I was gassing for.

Well this one has beat them all for this type of blackface overdriven tone. I don't use it as many people also recommend which is to put it at the end of your signal chain as a "tone shaper" or amp simulator.
I feel an extreme weight lifted off my shoulders now that I have that tone I've been searching for and it thanks to this little guy. I've never tried any other Wampler pedals and I couldn't tell you to go buy any of their pedals without having played and enjoyed them myself, but the Black '65 is REAL.

The only other OD pedal that I feel similarly about is the Rivera Blues Shaman and it also goes fantastically well with a DR but its slightly different, I'd say it gives my DR a tweedish vibe which I really like an find very musical.

My settings for overdriven DR in an apartment situation are:

Volume 2~3
Treble, bass and reverb to liking

Black '65:

Gain boost switch down (off)
Vol 9~10
Treble and mid pot 12:30
Bass pot 7 (rolled all the way off)
Gain pot at around 4

Rolling down on your guitars volume control makes it clean up so nice sounds just like going straight to the amp. It's great that all I have to do for OD I'd roll up the volume from 7 to 9 or 10.

Hope I could be of some help!
