Hey all, recently I was playing a set with my fender supersonic 60. I'll start off by saying my amp is very sensitive to impact. For instance if I aggressively lean on the top of the amp to just flick the power/standby switches it creates a really annoying squealing/screeching sound. When I say aggressively lean on it, I mean no more than just turning around and just flipping the switches while hitting my palm on the top of the amp. Trust me I try to take really good care of my equipment. Anyway back on topic, I was recently playing a set and all of the sudden during the middle of a song the amp just went haywire and it took me a second to realize it was my amp and I panicked because of how loud it was. I toggled the standby switch and it went away. When I was finished with my set I went to switch it on standby and my palm hitting the top of the amp triggered it again. Talk about unprofessional... At this point I was extremely frustrated. I tried to recreate what happened but I didn't want to beat on my amp. Any idea what it could be? I am thinking there is a short somewhere that gets triggered by the slight impact. Might I have to send it in to get checked out? I have an important gig coming up and I'm not sure I have the time or money to send it in for repair. Thanks in advanced!

Hi Bromosapien,

It could be a tube issue, maybe a faulty/microphonic tube triggered by a bump or vibration from playing. Or it could be a loose connection somewhere. Odds are, it's a tube. You might try some new preamp tubes. If a tube issue, it is likely a preamp tube, and V1 is the most sensitive position, but it could be any tube. You should be able to give the top of the amp a good rap to recreate the noise without causing any harm to the amp. A bad tube can make a horrible sound. Another possibility is a loose connection somewhere, such as in the reverb tank or circuit (combo), in which case you might need a pro to have a look at the amp. I would certainly try new preamp tube(s) first.

hey shimmilou, thanks for the reply, i'm going to test it out again tomorrow and give it a decent smack to see if it it happens again. I remember encountering this sound a while back at home, but never just out of the blue like that with no contact to amp. i also figured the amp shouldn't be that sensitive because every fender product i have owned has been pretty rugged.

+1 Shimmilou, those supersonics are pretty rugged, I would also think a microphonic tube is the culprit. But Bromosapian if you can recreate the noise, then try turning different knobs to see if you can isolate the circuit that is using the bad tube, that will help you to pin point the origins of the noise.

So I figured out the source of the noise. The reverb knob seems to be faulty. I was trying to recreate the noise and did a tap test on my tubes with no luck then today I went to adjust the reverb knob with my toe and I leaned in on it and the noise struck. it also changes volume based on how high the knob is turned, which is why it was so loud when I was playing with reverb at about 5. I'm going to have to call my shop and see if they will service it in time for my gig.

Too bad, i'm Canadian lol.

As it turns out its actually an issue with something behind the faceplate of the controls touching something else inside because even pushing the channel switch with a normal amount of force sets it off.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Going to have to send it in but for now i'm just going to rough it out. Turning the reverb down all the way seems to reduce the horrifying volume of the noise quite a bit.
