Just got my Blues Deluxe Reissue Smokey Tweed. Love it.

Started cranking the volume a bit more today (all the way up to 3!) and hearing rattle on certain frequencies.

Narrowed it down to the rightmost power tube...just touch it slightly and the vibration stops.

Any tips on stopping it? I can put up with it...but I'm mostly concerned about what it'll sound like when I'm miking it.

Thanks in advance!

Check and make sure that the tube socket and any surrounding screws and bolts are tight. If it is the tube and it is microphonic, your best bet is to replace the pair. The tubes are covered under warranty for 90 days, so you should contact the dealer you bought it from. They may just give you a new pair of tubes.

Also, one other thing. Check the tube's glass contact with the base. If it's a bit loose, it can cause a rattling noise, esp in combo amps. Super Glue works works well to reseal the contact. Just be sure to clean the area with isopropanol (and dry) before applying the blue.

Good luck!

Alright.

Listening to a few example of "microphonic" tubes on YouTube, it appears that my tubes are simply vibrating from being too close to the speaker.

And it's definitely only the glass rattling (I assume vibrating against the metal "spokey" thing inside the tube itself). I tried steadying the base with a pencil and the vibration continued. Only touching the glass (or stopping the note I'm playing) stops the vibration.

And, as I increase the volume, the vibration expands to include more frequencies.

So...

- Is it the quality of the tubes? I've read that these Groovetubes tend to vibrate more than others...but I've also read that in a combo amp, pretty much any tube will vibrate under the right circumstances

- Can I get rings for the power tubes? In the bit of reading I done on the silicone rings, they always seem to be in reference to preamp tubes. (As a note, the BDRI comes with vibration protection for the preamp tubes...but the power tubes are left dangling in the wind)

I have 2 Blues Deluxe originals with the Fender Premium tubes and they do not have any issue, I have a 75 Music Man with Groove tubes and it has be doing the some thing that yours is doing and I was wondering what the deal is however it was not that noticeable and I have just learned to live it. Wondering if it is inherit with the Groove tubes??

Nothing wrong with GTs, I use these as a preventative measure in combos. Pick the size and color for your tubes, preamp and output. They can also dampen the tone slightly, less of the glassy/ringing sound. But I agree, if the tubes are new, I would try to get replacements under warranty.

If the bottle is rattling, try a little Super Glue. I know this sounds funky, but it's an old-time cure for this issue.

As before--- the most important thing is to be sure the surface of the glass and base is clean. Rubbing alcohol on paper towel is fine. Dry. Then, apply a small amount. No need to press the parts. Just let the tube sit at room temp, for an hour bfore testing it in the amp.

BTW--- this techniques works for snapped-off center guides in octal tubes, too.

Thanks for the help, everyone.

I've got the dealer shipping me a new one on their dime, so I'll try that route first. The guy I talked to on the phone has the same amp and no issues, so hopefully it was just a fluke.

Ummm, hopefully they are shipping you a matched pair of tubes. Power amp tubes need to be replaced in pairs, not one at a time. If they are not reasonably well matched, you could have other problems with performance and sound.

Since the amp is new, and you are getting replacement output tube(s), I would recommend checking the bias. The bias is likely cold from the factory anyway, and many owners of new amps have reported that the factory bias is cold (this is the norm for nearly all manufacturers).

The good thing about GT tubes is that if you get the same color/number rating on the new tube, if you only get one, it should closely match the other. But checking the bias with new output tubes is the only way to know if everything is good.

Them: "Yes"
Me: "OK"

I would still insist on matched pairs just in case.

Update:

New amp has a similar issue, but a MUCH higher tolerance level before it happens. In fact, with them both in the same small room and me playing through the new one, the old one starts vibrating first...

Sending old one back, but still interested in a vibration dampener for the new one.

Ah! You have the Custom Shop "Trojan Vibrations Twister" version of the BDRI!

Sorry, the Devil made me do it.

My bet is it isn't a tube issue --- but rather a loose cab or circuit board or speaker or something else issue.

Good luck with the new one.
