I spend a lot of time both on this forum and the greater internet reading about changes and modifications that people perform to change or improve their gear. I find this makes for good reading whether or not I see or hear the difference the modder was going for and I enjoy investigating and contemplating the physics and other science related to the intended outcome.

Up until tonight this has been a purely philosophical curiosity for me. I have read about people changing the grill cloth on the champ 600 to a more acoustically friendly material and it seemed to me that, 1) this might improve the sound of my amp, 2) it is cheap so I wouldn't be out much if I didn't like it, 3) it seems simple enough that someone with limited handyman skills should be able to accomplish it and 4) if I totally destroy the amp it doesn't cost that much to replace.

So, I grabbed my screwdriver and went to work.

Here's what I learned.
1) It will take more tools that I initially think it will.
2) It is never as simple as it seems but knowing where to look for answers helps a lot.
3) I can do some of the simpler tasks and I could learn to do more difficult things.
4) I don't enjoy the actual doing of the mod as much as reading or thinking about it.
5) I don't get the same feeling of satisfaction of having "done it myself" as others do.
6) Simple changes can make a difference.
7) I have a greater respect for those people who can dive into an amp or guitar and can easily fix, change, or modify it.

All in all I'm glad I did it. I think the amp sounds less restricted and looks better. Sure a speaker change or major surgery like bluesky has done would probably do more but I don't plan to spend that much or get that hands-on.

Anyway, my respect to the modders out there and here is an after pic of my amp.

I went from modding my Champion 600 to building a 5F6A clone kit. Talk about a leap, that was it.

I've always been skeptical of this mod on the Champ 600 of changing the speaker grill cloth. Does it really make a noticeable difference?

+1

In terms of acoustic transparency, it's the difference between an old wool army blanket and a pair of fishnet pantyhose from Frederick's.

That is so good it deserves to be quoted twice. I think the biggest difference is at 3/4 to full volume. It actually sounds like overdrive should rather than that flabby farty sound of the stock cloth.

A speaker swap isn't that much of a stretch.

A few screws and a six-pack......

Thanks for the tip, sounds like Fishnet Panty Hose is the way to go.
One size fits all......speaker grills.
