I know that some of you already use this combination. I just wanted to post something that recently came to my attention. In past posts I've said that I'm not crazy about the OCD v4 in every aspect. When I made those comments I was using the OCD V4 through a Peavey Classic 50. IMO the Lovepedal Purple Plexi 100 sounds better through my Peavey.

However, my son bought a DRRI earlier this year. The Purple Plexi 100 does not sound nearly as good through his amp as is does through my Classic 50. The OCD on the other hand, sounds fantastic through his DRRI! Much better than through the Peavey.

Now I understand why some of you have praised the OCD. It sounds very different through 6V6's than EL84's. I know that's obvious in some ways.

Anyway, I really like both the OCD V4 & the Lovepedal Purple Plexi 100. It just depends on which amp I'm jamming through.

The part that puzzles me is that both pedals are aiming for British Marshall type tone. Considering that fact, I'm not sure why they play so differently with American / British tube flavors. I understand that different tubes have different tones but it never occurred to me that two pedals aiming for a similar thing might each require different amps to shine at their best. Maybe the OCD was designed & then tested through American tubes & the Purple Plexi was designed & tested through British tubes. Maybe the OCD sounds great through bigger British tubes & it just doesn't play well with EL84's. Not sure. Just thought I'd throw that out there to hear what some of you have as input on the subject.

Maybe I'm finding that I'm not a huge fan of EL84's after jamming through my sons SWWWWEEEEEEET Deluxe Reverb RI & experiencing the FAT, WARM, BUTTERY goodness that a pair of 6v6's can serve up.

I don't see the OCD as strictly "aiming for British Marshall type tone". It's the first stompbox in my pedal board chain and I find it useful for nearly any type of overdriven sound. The three-knob flexibility makes it versatile where a Marshallesque vibe is in fact desired but not to the point of exclusivity. And it works well with any type of vintage Fender tube platform, from a Vibro Champ to a Dual Showman.

I've had a similar experience. I once decided to take the plunge and order a TS808HW, completely blindly. That's a $350-$400 pedal. I play a Vox at home (EL84-based). Turns out I much preferred an old SD-1 from the 80's through that amp.

I feel pretty badly about the whole thing, but it was a valuable lesson.

Also, an amp's circuit design plays the biggest role in the overall tonality. The power tubes are just kinda like the icing on the cake. They do impart thier own flavor, but a small amount compared to the overall circuit design.

Au contraire, mon amí.

Whenever the topic of "legendary/iconic/traditional" Fender tone is discussed, the implied reference is to Leo Fender and the creations he left us. And these platforms are all built around 6L6's and 6V6's. Anything else is merely a pale imitation and total sophistry. That's why a Vox will always sound like a Vox, a Sunn will always sound like a Sunn, and a Fender will always sound like a Fender. Why do you think FMIC continues to build the blackface re-issues anyway?

It's because that "flavor" remains in demand.

If you've missed my point it's this......

The output tubes are what ultimately impart to an amp the lion's share of it's sonic character. And just as EL34's are the hallmark of a Marshall, 6550's give Sunn it's specific vibe, and EL84's deliver the Vox sparkle, 6L6's and 6V6's are where the quintessential Fender tone lives.

This is clearly a ploy to start an argument. Sorry, buddy. I'm not falling for it. Let's just agree to disagree.

There are five or six guys right here on this very board who are way ahead of you in that regard. But I'll be happy to consider you for the booby-prize.
