Has anyone had a tone tubby red alnico in their drri? How is the overall sound and is it worth it?

I installed an alnico Tone Tubby in a client's DRRI amp and it was quite impressive to say the least. I think you won't find a speaker with a smoother transition throughout the frequency band when driven into the "crunch zone". It's warm and articulate with a compressed OD signal, very reminescent of a vintage Jensen P12Q or P12N. It does not have the HF "shimmer" or "shine" of other premium speakers like an Altec or JBL but it provides a pretty balanced spectrum for traditional bar room blues or classic rock tones.

Is it worth the price?

Only your ears can decide.

As an aside, the hemp cones available on some of the Tone Tubby's seem to break in much more quickly than conventional paper diaphragms. If my recollections are accurate, they really start to shine in as little as fifteen hours.

Best of luck -- post your thoughts after the deed is done.

I swapped out my stock speaker for an Eminence Cannabis Rex in mine, and recently added an additional speaker cab using the stock speaker. I'm starting to think I like the stock Jensen better.

FWIW & IME... the Weber 12A125 with no doping on the cone, sounds pretty good. Esp for mid to high note articuations. And solid bass. Need to break the speaker in a bit. And this cominbation sounds better with old black plate 12AX7's (like RCAs),

If you like to use light reverb and vibrato --- tone is better on the lighter weight Weber paper cone with no doping. Than on some hemp-cloth speakers. YMMV :D

There, nearly all Net "safe" modifier abbreviations used in one post.
