hey all-

got a HRD (not an HRDIII) with a broken reverb. here is the symptom: there is no reberb :). the spring unit itself is working; if you tap on it, the sound of the springs comes out the amp. the pot is working; if you adjust the pot while tapping the springs, the amount of noise is adjusted accordingly. i have had this issue in the past, and my repair guy as resoldered the 5w 470 ohm resistors that are so often the cause of this issue. this time, i replaced them myself per justin holten's website, using higher quality parts as well as adding silicone to the back before hand. i did a really nice job. honestly. today i fired up the amp and still no reverb, though everything else works great. all channels switch, tone/volume controls work, etc. again, the springs make noise when you tap them. any ideas? i really appreciate it!

Are the tank's cables correctly installed?

Then likely it's an op-amp problem on the PCB.

first, thank you! second, sorry for the ignorance; what is the op-amp? is it a component on the pcb that can be removed and replaced?

See U2A/U2B. Dual op amp acts as driver/receiver for the reverb circuit.

Ummm, you didn't know what an op amp is. Do you have any idea how to test one out? These are multi-pin devices that are soldered into the PCB. They are not socketed and therefore not easy to replace.

My point was, there is nothing you can do to really "test" the op amp without specialized equipment. The best you can do is remove and replace it and hope the new one works assuming you don't destroy it in the process. Its not like swapping tubes. I strongly suggest taking the amp to a good amp tech.

Exactly. The op amp may not be functioning -- this may be a symptom and not the problem. Think of it like replacing a blown fuse -- if you don't fix what's blowing the fuse in the first place...

take it to a qualified amp tech.

My reverb suddenly stopped working the other day. I poked aroun but couldn't find anything wrong with the wiring or tank.

I took the amp over to a friends and he plugged the to and from wires into another reverb tank and it worked fine, so the amp itself was ok. Then we plugged the jacks back into the original tank again and everything worked fine. Must have just have been dust or corrosion on the contacts where the RCA jacks plugged into the tank.

Try unplugging and replugging the RCA jacks a few times. it worked for me. If that doesn't work, try to get to another tank to see if the amp will create reverb. If not you need to take the amp in for real repair. However, if it does work with the alternate reverb tank then you know at worst all you need is a new tank (about$35 online and can be changed by any novice).

Good luck!

You do realize that the thread you are responding to is a year old, right? I would hope that the OP has fixed the problem by now.
