Hello there, I was wondering if anyone could help me.

I have a Frontman 212R, that I am using with a Boss distortion pedal. After a short while of playing, it crackles, cuts out, goes quiet etc. This problem occurs only when using the distortion pedal, and only when using input 1 or 2. (power in does not have this problem, but using it rather rather defeats the point of having a boost).

Does anybody know what could be wrong, and what might have caused it?

Thanks.

Hi andrzejstepien, (glad that I don't have to try and pronounce that) :o

It sounds like a thermistor might be getting too hot. I presume that if you wait for awhile, the sound comes back? There are a couple of thermistors in the amp, one in the mute circuit which is a PTC that might be the culprit. This could be normal, the pedal causing too much distortion and overheating the amp. Most SS amps have some type of thermal protection like this, so this could be perfectly normal operation. Are you using the pedal and the amp's drive? That could certainly cause this, but it might also occur with the pedal on the clean channel.

how are you attenuating the signal?

In other words, is there a significant increase in volume when you engage the pedal?

if so, than you've just got to adjust the amount of output your slamming your pre-amp with.

What to try...

turn on the amp to a reasonable, normal playing lever.

Set the output level of the pedal so that the relative volume of your setup without the pedal turned on, is very close to the volume of the rig with the pedal engaged.

So turning on the pedal, just gives you the tone you wish.

Now use the amps volume to control how loud you wish to be

I will try out your suggestions - it is possible that the pedal was boosting the volume a tad too much...

Thanks for the advice guys!

Yep, that would cause the problem you describe, so likely there is nothing wrong with your gear. Let us know how you're making out.

So I had another go, and had no luck. The only way I could get it to work was by having the sound with the pedal significantly quieter than without, and then having the amp settings quite a bit higher, but even then, I started experiencing the same problems after 10 minutes or so of use. To be honest, if it was boosting the signal before, it was only by a marginal amount - I've been using the pedal to shape the tone, not to increase the volume...

The pedal is a Boss Powerstack ST-2.

No, without the pedal there is no problem.

I'm playing mainly on the clean channel, then using the second channel for lead work, but with the gain rolled down to 0.

Do you have another pedal, or a buddy with a different pedal you could try? At least you can then troubleshoot if it's the pedal causing you trouble.

You know, reading description of this pedal and the results you are getting... it really sounds like the pedal is either causing clipping in your amp (prolly pre-amp section). Or is impedance mis-matched for the amp. Or both...
