Yo, I play through a supersonic 60 combo... Usually it's awesome and gives me everything i want...and some!! but the vintage 30 can 'fart' quite a bit when using octave down pedals etc...

Has anyone changed speakers in theirs? Or modded in any other way to achieve a lower frequency capability?

If not, anyone got good speaker suggestions In general?

If you need extended bass response to favor an octave-down pedal I'd recommend a sealed-back extension cab.

Although the SS 60 is not a bass amp, the amp design provides for plenty of low frequency capability. However, the 12" Celestion Vintage 30 has a resonant frequency of 75 Hz and in an open back cabinet, is going to drop like a rock below that. A closed back speaker cab with the same type speaker will give you some low frequency extension and will make what you have capable of playing louder. Also, make sure that you use an 8 ohm extension speaker.

I've tried extension cabs but it doesn't necessarily solve the frequency response of the v30 speaker... So would a speaker change do the trick too? What sort of sPeakers would I be looking at to get more bottom without altering that awesome fender tone?

Cheers everyone....

What do you mean by "more bottom"? More low frequency extension (go down lower in frequency) or louder bass? If the former, you are limited by both the size of the speaker and the open back cabinet. You are not going to be able to go much lower in frequency under those condtions. Virtually all GUITAR speakers have a resonant frequency of around 75 Hz. Since the low E of a guitar is 80 Hz, thats about it. If you want louder bass, an extension cab will help you achieve that, plus give you a little more low frequency extension. You may need to go to a 15" speaker to get much more extension. Like I said, your amp is not a bass amp. If you are attempting to get a lower frequency response (say 40 Hz), you may need to use something more suited for a bass guitar.

I put a Eminence Man o War in mine. Handles the bassman circuit fine!

That speaker has an even higher resonant frequency (91 Hz) which won't do what I think the OP wants.

I think Arjay and Bluesky636 have given you the best advice here Nic. I know you want everything to be all encompased "built in" to your combo, but changing the speaker in your combo will change the amps sound (for better or worse). Their advice gives you the best of both worlds without altering anything. Just add a 8ohm 15" extension CAB to get better BASS. The downside is that you have to lug 2 pieces of amp equipment everywhere when gigging.

On a side note my SS TWIN makes a great BASS AMP, I know becuase I play my 5 string bass through it from time to time at jams. I do use the BASSMAN setting, but the "TWIN" setting sounds good too.

So in hindsight... New plan...

I use several pedals that push subs or octaves down... I use a supersonic 60 and have recently started adding a nice ampeg 2x10 that I had for bass... My plan is to try and use a crossover to stop anything lower than 75hz going into the vintage30 speaker in the supersonic, and all frequencies below would be sent to the 2x10... What's my best bet for having a go at this?

I DI as well live which really thickens up tone when blended with the mic'd cab and the crossover in the PA obviously sorts out the frequencies as with everything else. I guess I'm really trying to emulate having a sub on stage for monitoring etc, unorthodox I know... But, well time's they are a changing...

Hope someone can help! Cheers...

Two 10's may not give you much more bass or go lower in frequency than what you already have. Unless the resonance frequency of the speakers and overall frequency response of the cab goes lower than what you have, there will be very little difference. You also need to look at the speaker sensitivity and how much power is required to drive the cab. Finally, you need to be concerned with the impedance load being placed on the amp at low frrquencies. As an example, the Eminence 10" Basslite speaker has a resonant frequency of 51 Hz and usable frequency response down to 48 Hz. It is not very sensitive and would require a fair amount of power to drive it to any useful sound pressure levels.

If you are really serious about getting strong low frequency response to 40 Hz or lower, you should look at a dedicated bass amp/speaker combination with a active crossover to divide the frequencies sent to the INPUT of the SS60 and bass amp rather than trying to jury rig something off the output of the SS60.

Bi-amping is the way to go.

Awesome, so using a crossover into the supersonic at 75hz and below into a dedicated bass amp eg my bassman 100 silver face with the 2x10 could solve this... I'll give it a go and keep you posted...

Maybe a bassman 59 RI is what I really need... Any thoughts?

Good luck.

A 59 Bassman is a lousy bass amp.
