...in SURF GREEN!!!

Image

I've been looking for something to replace my Mesa Lonestar Classic. The Mesa is a great amp. However, for my needs it was the equivalent of buying a Ferrari just to drive across the street. I'm glad I started looking for a new amp when I did! It's dead mint and got it for a great price, too!

To be honest, I'm not too familiar with this amp and would appreciate some help. I have a few questions I'd like to ask.

1) How many of these were made?
2) What does each pre-amp tube control (V1, V3, etc.)?
3) Which tubes have you had success with?
4) If I decide to upgrade the speaker, which would you recommend?
5) Is it possible to change the pilot light?
6) Do you recommend any mods?

I know this my be a lot to answer but any and all help is always appreciated! I did some searching but couldn't come up with too much. Thanks!

Congrats on the new amp, looks nice. How does it sound?

The smaller tubes, V1, V2, V3, V4, V5, are preamp tubes (dual triode), each one has two halves. V1, V2, V4 are 12AX7, while V3, V5 are 12AT7. The larger tubes V6, V7, are the output tubes (pentode), and in this case are 6V6.

V1 - both channels, the first half as the first preamp stage and the second half for tone stack/volume recovery.
V2 - half used only for the burn channel, the other half used for both channels.
V3 - both halves used as the reverb driver. Be sure to use a 12AT7 or lower here, but not a 12AX7.
V4 - half for reverb recovery, the other half as another preamp stage for both channels.
V5 - both halves used for phase inverter (PI) to drive the output tubes.
Obviously you have to change the whole tube, you can't change only half.

Experiment with all kinds of preamp tubes to find sounds that you like, tastes vary. The preamp tubes are plug and play, but changing output tubes requires a bias check/adjustment.

The schematics indicate that the pilot light is an LED. You can verify by checking to see if there are red and white wires going to the light.

Why mod if you are happy with the sound? At least allow time for the speaker to break in before thinking about mods. Tube and speaker changes will probably have the most affect on the sound.

+1

Forty to fifty hours of vigorous play should be sufficient.

Thanks for the replies! That's the tube info I was looking for. I purchased the amp from someone that used to gig with it so I'm pretty sure the speaker is broken in.

I should have clarified my question. Is it possible to replace the pilot light jewel. Does it just screw off? Can I use any Fender replacement jewel?

bulb cover doesn't unscrew from the front on the ss22, rather there is a nut to get to from the back (pull the chassis) and you will see it.
wish they would have put the regular light setup on this amp

Hey TB, is the lamp jewel itself the standard Fender size and type?

It looks like the same type of jewel that is on the BJr III. The flared portion is part of the jewel, so not the same as a standard jewel. I think that there are no replacements in different colors, and I believe that the LED itself is red anyway.

Thanks, shimmilou!

There's a fellow here in town with a SS22 and he was asking me about it. I've never looked at one really closely so I wasn't sure what to tell him. I appreciate the pics.

Thanks for all the great info and pics! I had the amp open today and the LED is actually clear.

A problem has appeared in my beloved amp. Something is rattling and it's driving me bonkers! I have isolated the rattle to the tube socket but I have no idea how to go about fixing it. The socket itself or something around it seems to be loose. Any suggestions?

Cool, a clear LED, good to know.

Why do you think that it's a tube socket rattling?

The amp started rattling after you had it open?

The first mod I would do is make it tweed :)

Just kidding. It is an interesting color that will stick out on stage
like a sore thumb. It's kinda cool. It makes me want some ice
cream or a mint or something.

I'm happy for you on this amp. I've been eye-ballin' them myself
cuz they seem to be so versatile - good clean, or a little overdrive
and a monster rockin' distortion. And green-ish :)

Good call and congrats.

Thanks, Bivie! The amp looks great and sounds even better.

Shimmilou, I opened the amp to see what was causing the rattling. I believe it's a tube socket because the rattling goes away if I hold the tube a certain way.

It's likely the tube itself, not the socket. Substitute a known good tube in that position. Is it V1?

I believe it's the socket because I've switched the tubes and the same socket still rattles. It's actually one of the power tubes.
