All:

I have two acoustics- a Martin HD28 and a 1965 Gibson J50.

Somewhat reluctantly, I have decided to get a pickup for them. Here are the parameters:

1. Sound great

2. NO PERMANENT MODIFICATION TO THE GUITAR. No drilling, no cutting. Nothing like that. I want it removable.

3. Nothing that will damage or scratch the soundhole or anything like that.

Suggestion? Thanks!

Can't you mike the guitars? Like the photo?

My favorite acoustic guitar amp is the SWR Strawberry Blonde:

I used one of these until I was able to get a Fishman installed in my Taylor. (these require very minor mods and are just about invisible once installed.)

These two examples below are safe for the finish, easy to put in, easy to take out.

They sound good, and are best used with some sort of pre-amp or even just something like a Boss EQ to get a real natural acoustic tone. The only down side is sometimes when finger picking, it was sort of in the way, it was workable, just had to get used to feeling it there. they're pretty affordable, about 50 bucks.

One of my buds who plays had one of these, and I always thought it sounded good, and it's smaller so maybe for finger picking, you wouldn't feel it there. also, a pre-amp or EQ will allow you to dial in some real natural acoustic tones.

in both cases the only real drawback is the cable, it's gonna hang out of the sound hole, it's not a major fall back BUT, it's still something to consider.

I could mike it up of course but it is a pain live. Decided to go with a Fishman, actually. Thanks!

For the money, there's probably nothing that can do a better job than a Fishman acoustic pickup.

Len, if you really want the full effect, play the Fishman pickup through a Fishman Loudbox Series amp. My Martin Performing Artist Series guitar has a Fishman Analog system in it. I play small gigs thriugh a Fishman Loudbox Mini and it sounds beautiful. It still sounds like a Martin. I guess because Fishman doesn't have two million effects and amp models. Just your basic Reverb, Chorus and some have echo. That's it.

-but he did not want any permanent mod - no drilling :(
But I agree - Fishman is the solution ! I put it into my Furch (Stonebridge in the US, I believe )
I had to drill a 120mm hole for a new strap-plug with a 1/4'' jack-input , that's all - invisible
Tone & volume-control hidden behind the sound hole edge. Cool and good sounding 8)

I got the Fishman Rare Earth Pro 102 Humbucking. I don't think I will bother with an amp. This isn't something I will use much. Plug it into the PA when I do. Been thinking about getting a bass amp for my Jazz bass, so maybe use that. Thanks for all the info though!

Congrats! if you don't have one, a Radial JDI is an excellent all-around DI and works great with acoustics. Will also be good with your bass. Built like a tank, you'll have it for years.
