Hello All,

So I recently purchased what I thought would be my "dream amp" however I am having ALOT of issues so I thought I'd post here and try to resolve the issues before returning it to GC.

I bought a 65 Twin Reverb Reissue and got it home only to find upon unboxing that the reverb tank had completely detached and was magnetically stuck to the speakers. I remounted the reverb tank and then found that the reverb had a loud hum when turned up pass 7... this is with all both channels volume zeroed out. I exchanged this one for another at GC only to find that the new one was feeding back when the reverb channel was raised to 8 or above. I remounted the tank with the screws a bit looser and that stopped the feedback but I am still left with a loud hum. I have seen others have similar issues on the forum and across the web.

So my question before I return this is... Does ANYBODY have a 65 Twin Reverb Reissue that is not noisy when the reverb is raised above 7?

Are spring reverbs just noisy by nature? I have seen suggestions that switching the RCA cable out with a better quality (shielded?) cable could be an improvement but it really is unacceptable to have to go out and buy a new cable for a $1200 amp. I feel like there are some serious quality issues with both the amps I have tried. BUMMER!

Before you get too involved, check some simple things.
1) Pull out and push in your preamp tubes. Humming can come from bad connections
and possible poor wiring/soldering and wires accidentally touching something.

2) make sure your amp is connected to a true grounded three prong circuit
that is actually grounded. Some older homes are poorly grounded.
I have expensive dedicated portable power units that will clean all inbound
electrical current, surge & brown protection and be a ground to devices attached.
Belkan makes good ones for $60-$110 and I have three.

3) I have quite a few amps. The first thing I check is humming,
buzzing, crackeling, scratching, and all the channels with all setting(s).
When that happens, I envision that a wire or lead is broken or solder joint is bad.
So, I try to solve that repair issue by turning off most everything electrical
in my house, including all computers, radios, TVs and most all lights.
On occasion, this solves the problem as something is picking up signals.

4) Sometimes my guitar(s) cause humming until I touch them or cover
the strings & pickups with my hand. I usually think poor gounding.

If the problem persists, think a bad wire, bad capacitor, bad tube lead connection, etc.
and that the amp needs to have the components checked.

Toppscore :)

If you find the reverb tank stick to the speakers magnet , check the two reverb shielded cables. Yes, you must use shield cable. Any good shield cable do the job.

If you disconnect the two reverb cables from the amp have the hum ?

Stratele; Are you talking about the factory shipped reverb tank cables
or the guitar to amp cable? Do you think that the Fender Factory shipped cables
that come with Fender guitars are shielded?

I've several long Monster guitar cables ~ expensive and should be shielded.
Personally, haven't given much thought to guitar cables as causing humming.

Story: I bought my 1964 Super Reverb and complained about humming/buzzing
I tried to resolve it at home. Took it to my amp shop, there was no charge
except table time. Nothing was wrong!!! This shop had tons of overhead fluorescent
lights to give one a headache, much less signal interference. No problem at the shop.
Basically waste of time and money. Got it back home ~ the problem was gone.
I could not figure it out. Maybe it was a cable???

Am going to try to recreate it with a variety of guitars and different guitar cables.
We shall see. Toppscore :)

Yes I talk about reverb tank cables , NOT guitar cable. Reverb tank cable are shielded

About your trip to the shop , working with these cable could clean RCA socket ( on the back of the amp ) and make a better ground connexion = no hum at home. Same at the reverb tank

RCA reverb sockets are some time dirty / rusty , I don't know how to write that in english.

Thanks very much for the suggestions - it is very much appreciated!

I have tried it on verified grounded plugs, for what it's worth. Still hummed. When I disconnected the reverb tank it still made noise but it was a bit different sound. I don't really feel comfortable pulling tubes and shouldn't have to when this is a brand new amp that cost me over a grand. At this point it's back in its box and ready to go back to the store.

I can see Fender has a cool online community! Thanks again for your help and cheers!

Yes. You did well to try to all the things possible at home.
Make notes for the shop tech so he'll know what you have checked.
One thing is that if you went to the shop and the problem did not
show up, then that is a waste time and you are at square one.
Make sure you isolate the problem AWAY from home BEFORE the shop.
Good luck. Toppscore :)

Thanks! I'm not taking the amp into the shop I'm returning it to GC. The whole experience has been a bit of a let down. That being said... I would love to hear if ANYBODY has a TRRI or DRRI that has a quiet reverb!

My DRRI is very quiet. You have something wrong.

Yes. DO NOT take it to just any shop if it is under warranty. GC or a Fender Dealer
is the place to go. Guessing you always need to stress your amp is under warranty.
That is what it's for. Why waste time. GC and all Fender Dealers represent Fender.

Continuous...that is the first intelligent thing in this post. Not being harsh here, but you should have taken it back to GC immeadiately. HIGHLY suggest you have them give you a new amp, not your repaired one. Here is the process everyone should follow when buying ANY new amp.

1. Unbox the amp there in GC (or wherever you buy it).
2. Inventory everything to make sure they didn't leave anything out.
3. Do a thorough look see to ensure everything is where it is supposed to be, i.e., knobs, reverb tank, reverb cables, speakers, etcs.
4. Plug it in and power it up, start with the standby switch on and make sure everything works PRIOR to leaving GC.
5. Twirl all the knobs while playing to make sure they all work.
6. Have GC put it back into the box for taking it home.

Never try to work on an brand new amp, that is what the warranty is for and GC and Fender are usually pretty good about em.

And lastly to answer your other question, if operating properly, the reverb should not make any noise as it is turned up...just for future reference.
FWIW

It's good to know that the TRRI Reverb should be quiet. I would truly love this amp if the reverb wasn't noisy! I will take it back when I have a day off and continue my search.

cheers

Glad to help...just wish your Dream Amp, would have come through in the appropriate condition. Fender has been having QC issues with thier amps for a bit now, might be better off trying to find a TRRI from a couple years ago.

Let us know when your NAD arrives, and be sure to give us some pics!
