Hi Gilye - you can reduce the gain of the amplifier by changing Tubes, in V1 for example which comes standard with a 12AX7 (Gain 100) to a 12AT7 (Gain 60) or a 5751 (Gain 70). This reduces the volume of the clean channel and calms the amp down a little. I have an 5751 on order so I can't confirm what difference this makes from a 12AT7 yet, but this tube worked well for me. V2 I left the same to keep the gain channel reasonably high, but I have to admit to not liking this channel so never really use it. You can also change the 12AX7 in position V3 for the PI, to either of these tubes too, which calms it down even more. I left mine as stock as just changing V1 was good enough for me, but it also worked well to have both V1 and V3 as 12AT7's. Lots of folks have done this and like the amp much more. V2 is mostly for the gain channel, the first half effects both channels, the second half is only used on the Gain channel, I have not changed this one as it seems most people leave this as a 12AX7 stock as reducing the feed to it by changing V1 may remove too much drive, but you can aslo experiment with this one if you like too. Post your findings and thoughts and let others know how you got on.

Hope this helps, enjoy.

Cheers

Also, try input 2 as it is attenuated and using it will reduce volume.

Not keen on 5751 - my GT5751 Tube arrived yesterday so I tried it out in V1 position of my HRDLX3 and I have to say I was not impressed. It lost all that clean chime and had quite a lot of low level distortion. I never had a chance to run the amp up, but at low levels I did not like it at all,the clean sparkle had gone. It might be nice if that was the drive channel as it had a nice vibe for Blues, but if you want to keep the very clean Fender sound, at least for me the 5751 was not good. I put back my trusted 12AT7 tube and was very happy again with the amp. I have to say at first I thought this tube was faulty, but I bought 2 as no use in having just one if I liked it, the other tube was the same.

Only try this tube at least in V1 if you don't mind loosing the Fender clean shining tone.

Good point about input 2, I forgot to mention this, if you change V1 and use input 2 you calm it down a great deal more, but for me V1 with a 12AT7 and input 1 works just fine, the volume control is much more usable at no cost in tone.
