At first I thought it was the guitar, then the pedal board, then the cables, but when everything was unplugged and that high Bb kept ringing, I realized it was the amp. Changing outlets solved the problem and that's one obvious solution but since I would like to keep the amp in its present location I'm wondering if there's another option.

Thanks & Cheers!

Thanks for feedback, guys.

I actually had to Google this which tells you how little I know about amps. Is this something I can determine by looking inside the amp?

As far as I know they're fine. Could it be interference from the computer, LCDs, and printer which are all on the same circuit?

Can't be the amp if it works fine on a different outlet.

Yes.

Makes total sense to me, shimmilou, yet the intermittent nature of the ringing tone and the fact that it's a Bb intrigues me. I think the more common symptoms of EMI are noise, hiss, or a low hum are they not? ... Anyhow, not the bigest mystery in life so when the Bb returns I'll change outlets or switch to my Virbo Champ. .... BTW, the Vibro Champ is also on the same circuit as the Fender Deluxe with no noise issues. ... hmm...

Intermittent? You didn't mention that before.

If the problem doesn't occur when simply switching outlets, it would have to be the outlet, or other equipment connected on the same circuit. However, physically moving the amp might be what is temporarily relieving the issue.

In that case, maybe Retroverbial is right, something loose in the amp. You could try tightening the screws all over the amp, including chassis, speaker and baffle (easy on the speaker screws). Also, do you have the foot switch in the amp cab with the plastic wrap still on it?

+1

If intermitant then tighten all attachment points first and look for anything loose in the cab.

 I thought I had mentioned this in my original post but looking back I realize that I had not. Sorry.

LOL~! The foot switch is attached with velcro to my pedal board but it's very possible that I could have left it in the cab. Only recently did I discover and remove the plastic between the sliding parts of my "new" cell phone which I've had for almost a year.

So I'll tighten everything up nice and snuggly and look around for anything which may be vibrating.

Thanks all!

Grab one of these from your local hardware outlet......

Image

Use it to check the wiring polarity of all your home's wall receptacles. They're about ten bucks and most Home Depots, Lowes, and Ace Hardware stores stock them.

Good suggestion, Arjay. I have the exact same model in my tool box. After checking every outlet in house - for grins & giggles even checked the power bars - I'm happy to report the result was always Yellow-Yellow so the polarity is correct.

The Bb ringing tone went silent yesterday before I had tightened every screw I could see -- -- most required about 1/4 to 1/2 turn -- so I can't say that this did the trick but it certainly didn't hurt. For now all is well ... stay tuned to Bb 8)

Well at least you've removed one variable from the equation.

Monitor the situation and report any further corrective action(s) you take.

Hopefully, the B-flat "buzz" issue has been resolved.

Hey Arjay. I said "ringing tone" but as it turns out your description was predictive.
The high Bb came back today and it was not ringing. It was buzzing :!:

  • The amp was on for about 90 minutes or so. Working fine, no problems.
  • While playing, the high Bb buzz makes an appearance.
  • Turned amp off, waited about 2 minutes, turned amp back on.
  • Buzz gone.
  • About half an hour later and all is well.

Any ideas?

It's back .....
This time it's a ringing Bb as opposed to a buzzing Bb but it's still a Bb and it's getting rather annoying.

  • The amp was on and working fine for over two hours.
  • Then cames the High Bb ringing tone.
  • Put the amp on standby then took it off standby and this had no effect.
  • Turned the amp off, waited a few seconds, turned it back on and the Bb ringing tone was gone.
  • Two mintues later, the humming tone is back.
  • Switched to the Drive channel and the tone goes away.
  • Switched to the Clean channel and the tone appears.
  • Switched a few more times to confirm the pattern and the tone disappears when on the Drive channel.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

The amp is under warranty so maybe it would be better to take it back but before doing so I want to make sure it's not anything on my end with regard to outlet or settings or what not.

Of course, tubes are the usual suspects. I would suspect preamp first, although it could be output. The tubes are covered too for 90 days.
