I presently am using a Hot Rod Deluxe and am looking to get a second amp. The manual explains running the preamp out to power amp in when using multiple Hot Rods and that the primary amp controls the second amp except reverb etc. My question is would another Fender amp ( Blues Deluxe for example) work the same way...I would also like some advise on what other Fender amps would go well with my Hot Rod ?

The BDlx is identical as far as the controls, jacks and operation, with the only exception being the lack of the "More Drive" function. Other Fender amps might require the Preamp Out of the HRDlx to be connected to the input of the second amp if there is no loop in the second amp.

"control your amp" is a strong and potentially misleading term. Using the preamp out to power amp means you are bypassing the gain and tone controls of the 2nd amp, so that if you have 2 of the same amps, you can get the same sound louder. If not, you may not like the sound you get out of the 2nd amp.

It's a lot more fun to get two different sounding amps to cover more ground. Instead of using the preamp out, buy a good ABY Splitter (radial's bigshot is under $100) and then you can switch between your Hot Rod Deluxe, the other amp, or have them both on. I've found this to be great to pair a 6L6/6V6 Fender with an EL84 Dr. Z - you can get the best of both worlds.

Good idea nedorama

Another option, cheaper but not as versatile as the ABY, would be guitar into input 1 or 2 on the HRDlx, then patch the other input of the HRDlx to one of the inputs on the second amp. This also allows all controls on both amps to work.

Good point Shimmilou - old school way to hook it up and try it out.

Guys, Ended up ordering a Limited Edition Hot Rod Deluxe III which has the Jensen P12Q speaker as opposed to the Celestion Vintage 30 in my HRD II. I got the Limited Ed. only because I got a good price on it....Just wondering how the Jensen will compare, never had one..Thanks for the previous advise.

I have a couple of Ri Jensen (Made in Italy, correct?) --- sitting in cardboard boxes. My Celestion Vintage 30 regularly "sees" electricity, in the Matchless amp.

Ppl say that the new RI Jensens need break-in time. But, I didn't hear too much difference (in a 1962 Ampeg Jet) --- after a one week of hard test driving. It had an odd overtone, when pushed. And breakup wasn't exactly smooth, like the original USA made P12Q. IMHO.

That Celestion V30 sounded very nice, from the get go. Big, warm, rounded tone. Nothing like the RI Jensen, in the Ampeg.

BTW... running a used Weber 12F125-O (slightly doped) in the Ampeg, now. Very nice, shimmering tone. This speaker really goes nice with this amp (esp the great Vibrato/tremolo). FWIW...

Thanks BMW...I have a Hot Rod Deluxe II with the Vintage 30 and it's great although LOUD and I've looked at the Weber attenuators as well..Another question...Do you use any kind of overdrive or distortion effects with the Weber or do you even need tthem ?
