My amp has a date code of B-181xxx and is MIM. I'm looking for a way to indentify the year it was made.

Search the Internet & Fender sites

For starters:

Toppscore 8)

That's not a date code, it's the serial number. Look for a sticker inside the cabinet like the one in the pic below, or similar sticker on newer amps. Check the site to decipher the two-letter date code on the sticker.

If there is no sticker, contact Fender with the serial number and they can tell you when it was made.

Shimmy. Off-hand, have you ever seen any Fender Serial Numbers
that include date codes? Such as N for nineties, E for Eighties, S for seventies, etc?
Or, are we talking about the build date of "HJ" etc?

Thanks. Toppscore :)

Guitars have a year code within the serial number as you've indicated, amplifiers do not. Amplifiers have a two letter date code on a QA sticker, or on the tube chart, separate from the serial number, but not all will have this code. As per the site, HJ is 1997 October.

Interesting. To me, as you mentioned typical Fender guitars have year indicators
within most guitar serial numbers. One can get closer to the month and week
when taking the guitar apart and checking components.

To me, I agree that amplifers' serial numbers indicate minimal.
Some serial numbers can fall into a group of SNs that may indicate a particular year.
I seek the chassis stamped build date if possible, and I'm sure you do.

When did Fender go back to using two letter date codes for amps?
I believe all my Silverface amps have no two-letter date codes.
I have Paul Rivera era amps and Bruce Zinky Amps to check.

Just wondering, researching my 1983 Concert II and Twin Reverb II . . . .
Both have SN's that start with F3xxxxx and was told that meant 1983.
I could be wrong, but I've nothing to counter that comment for accuracy.

What do you think about "post-Silverface" amp serial numbers indicating decades or years?
