There is no way a Princeton comes even close tone wise to a Twin. They are way too different. First, the Twin is a 6l6 powered amp, the Princeton is 6v6 powered. In a 6v6 powered amp the tone will "bloom", a Twin won't. I've had a Twin for over 30 years.
The Princeton has a 10" speaker and 15 watts, the Twin is 2x12. at 85-135 watts depending on the version you have. Mines a 100 watt sf. You will have a hard time getting a Twin to break up at a comfortable level.

The Princeton is a fine amp, but comparing it to a Twin tonally is a bit odd.
There are many boutique amps the sound just as good as a Princeton IMHO and are more versatile.[/img]

Well the 5e3 is a totally different animal from the PRRI. That's kind of like someone saying they would rather have a fishing boat than a sailboat. Both are fine, but very different.

"Remember, Fenders best selling amp, the Hot Rod Deluxe is made in Mexico."

Yup - and it is less expensive than a PRRI. I love my HRDLx BTW.

Not really a fishing and a sailboat.

The 5e3 is a roughly 15 watt tweed circuit. It is much more versatile tonally and much more dynamic IMHO.
I also have a HRDlx, it's not even close to one of the best amps I've owned. It's price point helps it sell. I like it, it's ok. Not bad, but not really thrilling either. I was blown out by an 18 watt Marshall combo on one of my guest appearances while using my HRDlx.
I just call em as I see em. I've been a Fender fan since 1964. Some amps are just better than others. Now that I've sold off most of my high wattage gear, I'm starting to pick up smaller lower wattage amps. Because of the Princeton's price point unfortunately and sadly I'll have to pass.

Got my PRRi 2 weeks ago. This tone is what musicians die for!!! I compared it to my '77 SF PR and it is as good if not better. Now I can tune in stereo with the right adjustments. I will not hesitate to replace this amp shoud it ever get stolen, but will guard it with my life right now!
Also, this amp is a lot lighter in weight than all the others people are talking about. The best tone my 60 yr old body has ever heard or lifted!

This was a great thread for me. Thanks everyone. Last week I put in an order for the PRRi, without having played one. I've got about a two month wait or more, so I'm told. But I think I'm going to be pretty pleased. And if not...the search will continue.

A two month wait ?!?! I guess the price didn't hurt sales as much as I thought it would!!!

You never know. Whenever a new product is announced like an amp, car, camera etc., there is usually a limited quantity available. It could be just to see how popular a product is going to be so they can adjust production.

I'm going to wait until they hit the used market. A used Deluxe Reverb Reissue IMHO is a better value, has two channels, and a bit more power for gigging, and can be had at a reasonable price.

The amp is still available out there on-line. I assume there may be some shops around the country that have stock. But I know a local shop who gives me good deals, in this case $99 off of the common on-line price. He orders direct from Fender and this is what they told him.

As for me, I just sold a Hot Rod Deluxe (what a great amp!) to generate funding for the Princeton purchase. At first I only wanted to power down to about 15w because I only practice and jam with friends in our homes, and the Hot Rod just wanted to be cranked up. So I was looking for something a little more controllable at lower volume, and lighter in weight. But I also had other preferences, like all-tube. At first I was set to buy the Princeton Recording amp, but eventually the price tag got me to thinking maybe I should think more towards a Super Champ XD or similar (notice for me it is all Fender or nothing). Then I ran into the new ads and articles for the 65 Reverb.

Long story short, my choice here has all to do with sentimental value (as well as knowing I will have a great sounding amp). As a kid in my first garage band, our lead guitarist had a 65 PR amp. I've loved them ever since, and now was my chance to have one at a practical price. So while there are better deals, for me personally, I'm getting my moneys worth.

And at my age, 2 or 3 months goes by in minutes.

Lots of good comments and kudos, everybody. I know I am loving MY personal '65 Princeton Reverb amp, bone stock, sitting right next to me as I type this.

For what it's worth (63supro)...we are not toying with anybody or testing the water; we are backordered because the amp simply sold way more than what we anticipated. It's a good one!

Thanks,

Shane

Yeah, well tell you what Shane...put a little kick in the production line over there. I'm a very patient man, but not that patient!

 8)

If the PRRI is anything like the original, you gotta have one. I played in a rock band back in the early seventies and we did the military circuit. OCs, NCOs, etc. @ "Scofield", "Barbers Point", "Wheeler", "Kaneohe", "Camp Smith" and some others. That little beast could handle any of the rooms we played un-miked. The Princeton Reverb sounds like any of the bigger Fender amps when played clean but push it up to 7 and beyond and this thing screams! Absolutely screams, and the harmonics are so so juicy. Fat, screaming, juicy, ....add your own description of pure perfect tone and overtones. This is what I think of when anyone mentions "Princeton Reverb".
Sorry folks, I guess I got lost in reminiscence. I recently bought a DRRI but that was before the announcement of the PRRI. I'm planning on getting a PRRI too. BTW, the DRRI is the same story only a little louder. I saw Jeff Beck play through a DR (miked) at the HIC in Honolulu back in 1975 shortly after the release of "Blow By Blow". Un-FN-real!

I think the Princeton is a bit more suited for practice or recording. I always had a problem getting over a drummer with it and back then he wasn't that aggressive. I almost always unless it was a small bar had to mic it. I only had it for a short period of time. The Deluxe Reverb cuts a lot better. IMHO
You are right about one thing, it's a great sounding amp.

I just heard and saw some of the demos that have been put out with the Princeton Reverb. What I was talking about in my earlier comment was the sound of it being driven by "Humbuckers". I love Fender amps but personally prefer Gibson guitars. I've actually caught myself screaming at my "Strat" yelling, "Come on! Let's go! Sing you B*****d!" while trying to pull more out of it than it can give. BTW, I no longer own any "Strats". I like to drive amps without the use of outside appliances. (just straight in) That's not to say that I don't use them but when you're trying out a rig to see or hear how they put out, I prefer straight in and all different kinds of settings. I'll admit that I believe that Fender guitars are the industry standard when it comes to "Country". In fact, many rockers play with "Strats". Again, it's just my preference to play with "Gibsons".
On another note, some mentioned "Twins" not being able to produce good distortion or breakup or something to that effect. I beg to differ. One of my mates was a master at that albeit with the use of a "Tone Bender". I think that they've since replaced that device with what is now called the "Satchurator".
