I don't mind dropping a grand (or more) on a piece of gear.

But you can damn sure bet it won't be on anything built in the last 35 or 40 years.

The problem is that not too many people know what quality gear is. If I was seriously gigging like I did way back, I would be using either vintage Femder gear or Victoria. Right now I play Egnater. I don't expect to get 30 years of trouble free service from my amp. So far after two years it's been flawless but I don't expect it to last forever. But current Fender amps? Nope. My HRDlx lasted 3 months. Everybody uses cheap parts and cost cutting assembly in high production amps. New players expect gear to be inexpensive. I know better. My best guitars are made by Gibson, Fender, Supro and Martin by American workers on American soil. My beaters are from Japan, and China. The thing is you can still support American guitar companies for under and a little over a grand and have an instrument not made overseas.

This '72 could worth more than $2000 on the market today

According to the inflation calculator linked to earlier in this thread the $50 I paid for a used Mustang I would've cost $6.89 in 1964.

Then again, the processing power in a Mustang I would've filled a room in 1964. So something comparable to the Mustang I might've cost millions in 1964. :P

Some of the amps way back had no problem filling a room. Most 40-50 watt tubes amps will blow a 100 watt solid state amp right off the stage. Also some amps cut a mix better than others. My HRDlx 40 watt couldn't cut a mix with my other guitarist playing an 18 watt Marshall combo. My Egnater 20 does it no problem. It's all about the amps design. Don't kid yourself, those old little Fender amps were loud.

I was referring to the actual computing power in a Mustang I amp and that an equivalent amount of computing power in 1964, with then available technology, would have literally filled the room with hardware from floor to ceiling.

Except maybe that tuck 'n roll stuff that Kustom used to use. Their new amps look too industrial.
