Just wanted to post some info tube array with the SS22 and if anyone wants to reply with some of their discoveries please do~
I was having fun with my SS22 and changing preamp tubes and listening to the JJ6V6's I put in.
Put in a 5751 in V1 and I like~
Put in JJ6V6's and played while I was biasing, I was thinking around 24ish mA would sound the best to me. Maybe 30 ish even. Turned the dial to 30 and played, 28, 26, 24 as well. Then I went to 17-18 mA and whoa@@!......I thought maybe my ears were playing around with me, so I played some more with 17 then went back up to 24 then back to 17 and back to 30.
Wow! I never would have thought that it sounds better cold, but with these JJ's it does to me.
I have way more headroom for our jazzy stuff and the funk. And the dirty channel is great, the gain knobs seem to have more spectrum. Before I would go for 4ish on gain for rockabilly/boogie stuff and 6ish for heavier, but could never go much over that because it would fall apart. Now I can go from boogie all the way into my peavey xxx sound.
Yeah, I kinda miss that briar-bush dusty early breakup sound I would get with the GT6v6 or EH6v6 biased hot-clean channel volume on 6-7 & guitar volume on 10. But with that, I never had quite enough headroom for some of our songs~
I am glad I listened while I biased it, don't know why I didn't before. Always do with my other amps.

Hopefully you measured the plate voltage at each bias setting so that you know what the % of max plate dissipation for the power tubes really is. Saying that you set the bias to 18 mA or 30 mA means nothing unless the plate voltage is also known.

nah, just adj bias knob and listened ( well, then took reading )
i remember when i biased the JJ's when i first put em in, the plate voltage was 413VDC biased at 26mA
so does that mean at 17mA the plate voltge is higher now?
i just played for 3 hours ~ love the sound now!!!@@

Probably. But you won't know how high unless you measure it.

why should i care in this particular instance?
if the dial brought a 6V6 designed amp with a 6V6 tube to withn range specs and the amp is stock, what should i be worried about???
btw, please do not take me as being rude, just asking~
i like to learn+

Like I said, you need to know the % of maximum plate dissipation that the tubes are running at. That is calculated by multiplying plate current (cathode current, which is what you are measureing is close enough) by plate voltage and then dividing by the tube's max power rating. JJ 6V6S tubes are 14 watt tubes. Other 6V6s may only be 12 watts max. You want bias adjusted so that you get somewhere between 50% and 70% of the maximum plate dissipation at idle. Too low a bias and the amp may sound sterile with nasty distortion (called crossover distortion). Too high a bias and the tubes may overheat (plates may glow red) and have their life reduced. Within that range, the tubes will hit their "sweet spot" and sound their best.

That's why you should care.
