Do you have the schematic ?

All a I found is that Pro 185 is a tube's amp , not transistors

Adam...The Pro 185 is a Solid State Amp, NOT tubes...Do not unplug the speakers with the amp on, you will blow the transformers for sure...they need the speaker load.

I haven't found a schematic yet, but still searching...here is a little info for you on the amp though...FWIW.

specs/info first...they are 160 watts, came with three button footswitch had 2x12 Eminence Speakers and had an adjustable effects loops...Fender Part #22-5600 and cost 669.99 and cover cost 25.99 according to the June 1990 Price List.

These came out in 1989 and lasted until 1993 when the red knobs and grill cloth changed to black knobs and silver grill cloth to give them a more traditional Fender amp look. Channel A's tone control has a Mid Cut, and the B channel has Gain, Gain Boost, Mid Boost, Contour, Tilt, and Presence.

These amps were part of the "Fast Four" and were the first successful Solid State amps Fender made. They sounded good, were reliable and offered some modern sounds, along with a good Fender clean. These amps later became the Standard Series.

If you ever run across a book entitled "The Fender Amp Book" by John Morrish, pick it up it has an extensive section on these amps, as well as all Fender Amps up thru the 1990s. The reference section in the back does a nice job of differentiating the amp specs like when an amp went from a tube rectifier to a Solid State one. This book comes up on E-bay every now and again, and is worth the $15-20 they go for.

Solid state amps don't have output transformer.

And thus, unlike a tube amp, it is OK to use a solid state amp without a speaker connected.

Really? I thought that big hunk of iron on these amps was the output transformers? Sure looks like one...Forgive my ignorance here, but then what is that?

My guess would be power transformer.

Correct. It's mounted semi-exposed on the exterior of the chassis to encourage convective cooling. Most of Fender's solid-state models are designed in this manner.

People tend to forget, or not realize, that while tubes are voltage amplifiers, power transistors are current amplifiers. They may not require the high voltages that a tube does, but transistors can draw a lot of current. Hence the need to cool the power transformer.

No load, No problem.
No harm, No foul.
Just keep speaker loads or an attenuator active for tube amps.

BS...Thanks, did not realize this difference, don't have much experience dealing with SS...just always assumed they were similar in the way they operated. I always heard you must always have a load on a tube amp and kind of thought that would be true of a SS amp as well. Learn something new everyday!
