I just got 3 JJ gold pin 12AX7's for my Blues Jr. They sent me 2 ECC83S's and 1 ECC803S. Which tube socket should I put the 803 in? I've searched all over but the answer continues to elude me.

Thanks . . .

Gold pins are a waste of money in a guitar amp.

A long plate 803S is not recommended for use in small combos as they can be more microphonic than a short plate 12AX7. See first description:

http://www.eurotubes.com/eurotubes-ECC8 ... 7-KT88.htm

I hope one of the tubes is balanced for use in the phase inverter whether it is the 803S or regular 12AX7.

Thanks for the reply! I got these on a special deal, so I didn't have to lay out any cash. I might grab another ECC83S or try something else altogether, along with a pair of EL844's as time goes on . . .

I would be interested to hear a report if you ever try the EL844
I got some GT EL84 rated #3 for breaking up at a lower volume. So far i'm loving those.
I have been trying to get more power tube break up than pre-amp. I'm running it like this now:
V1 - 12AY7
v2 - ecc832 (for Cathode Follower Mod)
V3 - ECC81
I crank the Master all the way up and use the Volume control for... well... Volume :)
It gets right in the sweet spot at levels loud enough to compete with a drummer.

With BillM Mods and a Swamp Thang this little guy sounds huge. So far it's my favorite amp with my Les Paul and it sounds pretty darn good with the strat as well.

Thanks for the info. The good thing about the Blues Jr. is that it doesn't cost a fortune to experiment with different tubes (aka "rolling", but not in the Limp Bizkit sense). I tried out a lot of small amps before setting on the BJ, So far I haven't regretted the decision . . .
