Bill, get your thick skin back on and get back here. We miss you brother. But you need to "man up" a tad bro.

Just gonna throw my two cents in for an alternate point of view.

As has been previously said, quack comes from the locations of the pickups but there is another factor involved as well and it's not phase. I do not pretend to fully understand the physics of it as I am no sound or electonics engineer but I do know that pickup output has a direct affect on quack. In my own personal experience for example, I have noticed for decades now that the middle pickup hieght adjustment can increase or decrease quack. If I lower my middle pickup quack is increased. I now believe this is directly related to the lower output level of the signal generated by the pickup as a result of its increased distance from the string. I have noticed that higher output pickups seem to have less quack potential than vintage style pups. Additionally, I read an article several years ago (which I looked for just now but can't seem to find) in which Lindy Fralin decribed position and output of the pickups to be the two principle sources of Strat quack; and in that order. IIRC he may also have indicated that an output differential between the pups is also a factor. It has been about 8 - 10 years now since I began shifting my preference from high output pups to low output pups. I also adjust my pups much lower than I used to and I am very happy with that setup.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
