I have a rather nackered Princeton 112 Plus.

http://support.fender.com/manuals/guita ... manual.pdf

Having just changed my rig around to use a rack mounted pre/poweramp setup i am thinking about using the Princeton as a small and portable 1 x 12 cab for rehearsal purposes and wiring in a jack input and switch so i can just use it as a cab and bypass the actual amp when neccesary and just use it as a cab by flicking the switch.

I dont think the stock driver will the handle the output from the Marshall 8008 poweramp i am using too well so i am considering replacing it with an Eminence Legend 125 75W 12" 8ohm

my question is as i do sometimes like to use it as a standalone combo from time to time will the amp have any problems working with the Eminence driver...?

If not the Princetone would function as a little combo and a handy portable 1x12 cab and i'd be a happy man!

Hi mkol,

The Princeton 112 Plus amp puts out about 65 watts into an 8 ohm speaker, and the Eminence speaker is 75 watts and 8 ohms, sounds like a good match.

Thanks for your reply shimmilou, it look like its going to work, the other thing i'm trying to figure out is whether replacing the existing driver with the Eminence Legend 125 is going to be worth it, do you happen to know what the stock drivers were in the Princeton 112 plus?

All it says on it is 'Fender musical Instruments special design speaker'.....as the amp kicks out 65watts as you mentioned, i am guessing it would be at least 75watts itself?

So would the Eminence be a worthy step up?

I have a Hotrod Deluxe fitted with the Eminence 125 and thats seems to be able to handle some pretty hefty volume and low end.

You will not likely find the specs for the stock speaker anywhere. Only one way to know if it will be an improvement to change to the Eminence.

Disconnect the Emi 125 in your HRD then wire it up to the Princeton 112 Plus and you shall have your answer.

I have the Champion 110, the Princeton 112s little brother.

Swap out that speaker and you are going to be one happy dude. Those cabinets are solid and Fender certainly knew what they were doing with the circuit. I have a Lil Buddy in mine.

I emailed Eminence and they told me the specs on the stock speaker (it was made by Eminence for Fender). Either that or I might have called Fender. At any rate this is pre-internet so you're better off just checking with the manufacturer if you really want to know. It's in their system, just not online.

Yeah, I'd like to see any specs that you got from anywhere on the stock Fender speakers made by Eminence, please share.

This is what Eminence told me about the Champion 110 speaker:
"The stock speaker is a custom design that we manufacture to Fender's specifications. It has a 1" voice coil and a 15oz ceramic magnet. I believe they rate it at 30 watts."

It's actually a pretty good speaker, but the Lil' Buddy is a real upgrade. Powerful bass and a smooth high end, all while sounding more articulate.

I wouldn't regards such generic data as "specs". More like something found on a PR puff sheet.

Holy negativity!

Yes I've been brainwashed by the Fender/Eminence PR machine.

I don't make that observation perjoratively Wayne, but merely as a statement of fact. A "spec sheet" for a loudspeaker is what you'd find with Ebay listings from many vendors who sell new Eminence or Jensen products -- IOW, complete operating parameters, physical dimensions, Thiele & Small characteristics, free-air resonant frequency, SPL, recommendations for enclosure type, etc.

Sure. What more I know.

- Sold in open back enclosure
- SPL is noticably less than Lil Buddy
- Depth is about the same as a Celestion Tube 10 (i.e. not very deep)
- 8 Ohms
- Doesn't weigh much

It has less bass and is less clear-sounding than the Lil Buddy, with more piercing highs. Doesn't do well when cranked, gets kind of smeary and harsh-sounding. Then again, I'm sure someone out there might like that.

Now I've gone and picked up a Princeton 112 off of Ebay and am wondering how mkol's speaker change went. Any updates?

Certainly there's nothing wrong with the stock speaker in the 112 and it sounds quite nice compared to the one in the Champion 110. I agree that there is room for improvement though. I'm looking at the Red, White, and Blues for mine.
