I'm very pleased about finally having an SST in the house, but less charmed by a distinct background noise, which is there regardless if a guitar is plugged in or not. A certain soft background hum is of course a tube trademark, but this noise is louder than on my previous Hot Rod III. It resembles the noise you get when plugging a cable into the amp without plugging it into the guitar and sort of "reverby". The noise is not affected by turning any of the knobs on the front or back panel. Bias control says that tubes are OK and sound/tone/volume do not seem to be affected. A fawlty pre-amp tube (reverb)? There are no other appliances close to the amp and it is properly earthed.
I'm lost - any clever ideas? :?:

Some carefully selected pre-amp bottles might improve the S/N ratio but really, it's the nature of the beast with these high-gain switchable-mode designs. You might spend a hundred bucks on premium glass and the issue may still remain.

Best of luck, HTH

I had the head version of this amp. Noise was also an issue for me, if it's the same noise as your describing is another matter. Can only describe it as a background whine/hum.
I found that when switching the amp on, the effect loop and reverb had to be switched on via the footswitch to stop the noise. If it was powered up with either function off or the footswitch not connected the noise was present. I never got to the bottom of what was causing the noise as I traded the amp in, but try the above method and see if your noise level is reduced.

Right, that gives me some hope since I haven't used he footswitch yet (still missing, but will be here in a couple of days). Yours is probably the same kind of noise and at present it is beyond the limits of what is acceptable. It would certainly not do in a studio setting.

Hope is still at hand. Thanks a lot!

Why did you trade it?

I don't know what you mean by whine/hum noise but on my SS Twin I get a low level HISSS noise also known as white noise, which is pretty loud if you are sitting next to the amp in a room trying to play it at bedroom volumes, and the reason it is not affected by any knob adjustments is because it origionates from the REVERB circuit which is the last circuit before the POWER TUBES...... PREAMP->EFFECTS_LOOP->REVERB->POWER_TUBES. Also remember this amp is 100Watts so when playing it at volumes it is intended for then those noise levels are negligeable. Also the REVERB circuit can only be switched OFF and the EFFECTS LOOP switched ON once the footswitch is connected. Then you can test to see if it is the Reverb and maybe concentrate on getting that quieter, although I doubt it can ever be dead quiet. You can also turn the REVERB knob down to ZERO to try and reduce it's effect if you don't have that footswitch yet. If you have a distinct humming noise then that could very well be a BAD/UNSTABLE power tube. Try rule out your house mains as the cause too.

Purely a personal thing. After being initially impressed with the amp following a few lengthy sessions in the shop, I just couldn't settle with it.
Constantly tweaking and adjusting to dial in what I was after. Found the bass lacked punch and was quite wooly sounding. Even changed the speakers in my cab to try and help.
So after a while I just lost patience and interest with it so it went.

If you think your background noise it bad, you guys should try out a CVR! You won't think your amps are noisy at all after that!

Also, you guys mentioned it's hissing when you don't have anything plugged in or when you're not playing... How much hiss do you hear while you are playing?
