I haven't seen more than a few posts about this amp in the past year. Is this because they are that less popular than the rest of the reissue series, or because they are that much less problematic? I just picked one up a month or two ago, hence the worry. After the tried and true tube pulling/swapping/rebiasing, and once the speakers broke in, this thing sounds just so good. Saw a fair amount of bashing on the RI, but my SRRI doesn't seem to have the brittle harse highs I've read about or heard in clips or in comparison to many in local shops within a few cities, especially after the tweaking/break in. Guess they are all a bit different. Definately getting the handwired conversion, and seriously considering the mercury magnetics upgrades. Is there really that much difference with the Merc upgrade?

If it "sounds just so good" then why do you feel compelled to spend hundreds of $$$ on these nebulous upgrades?

Why didn't you just buy a decent pre-ultralinear silverface SR, back-date the chassis to AB763 specs, and be done with it?

Because the SRRI is lighter than the SF. Easily modified too. My TRRI is PTP wired and blackfaced and it weighs 64lbs. The SRRI's sound great and are reliable.

I'm curious how you "Blackface" a Twin Reverb REISSUE.

So as Arjay asked, if the SRRI sounds great and is reliable, why change it?

Yeah, I agree with Arjay here. What the heck is the point of gutting the amp to basically put the exact same circuit back inside it? Empirical evidence has shown there is ZERO audible tone difference between PTP, hand wired, or PCB innards.

This is like saying, "I love this car. It runs great and there's nothing wrong with it! But, I'm having my mechanic pull the engine and do a complete teardown and rebuild just so it can be hand assembled locally by my tech."

For the record, I own an SRRI. It's a beautiful sounding amp, however I don't use it much at all due to it's size, weight, and volume. As it is, I have to use an attenuator on my 12 watt 5E3 clone.

+1

If the SRRI has any shortcomings, they're the same as all the re-issues -- namely, they're all biased too cold from the factory, the tubes are (usually) crap, and the OEM speakers deliver less-than-stellar sonic performance. On the bright side, all of these deficiencies are easily correctable and once addressed, the amps are capable of dependable, reliable, service.

Probably my favorite current production Fender!

(besides the Custom Shop amps ... but that's a different story  )
