I recently bought a 1998 Hot Rod Deluxe which is visibly in mint condition. The clean channel sounds great. - But the drive and more drive channels are not producing ANY distortion. They increase the volume only. I've tried to vary the drive setting along with master, reverb, presence - with no effect.
-Any suggestions?

Thats weird. You should hear some break up. Look at the tubes in the back. Do they have a blue label. That color breaks up easiest. If they're white, they don't.

If your looking for "BIg Drive and More Drive" the hot rod may fall a little short... I have one and just love it, no complaints about it. I agree that you might want to check the tubes, you should hear a Decent (not great) change,if the amp is working properly... GET THE KINKS WORKED OUT, YOU WoNT FIND A BETTER AMP OUT THERE!

Play on...

Bill

The tubes in mine are white label Groove Tubes. I see the manual notes call out red, white and blue label tubes. what's the difference?

The colours broadly represent GT's grading system. The idea is that if you go with same colour, you won't need to adjust bias when changing tubes.
In effect the Blue tubes break up earliest , red are the cleanest , with the more commonly fitted white labels being the middle ground.
[ I think I got that the right way round...White is certainly the middle one  ]

Consider yourself lucky. The clean sound for the HRD is good. Drive and more drive are horrible.

Forget about the power tubes. The distorted tone of the drive channels is the preamp tubes. I would guess that it's a bad solder joint. The HRDs are plagued with bad solder joints. Take it to a tech.

I am not being mean, I gave up on my HRD after many failured. I even taught myself to fix solder joints because I got tired of taking the HRD to the tech.

Thx for the info folks, I think I'll leave it alone for now anyway. It does sound great clean. I'll be back asking for advice when I actually get to swapping out tubes.

White labels break up the latest and that's probably your problem. Rawk on.
