Have a 600 that I really like and have done most of mods like bluesky636 in his 600 thread. My question is replacing the output transformer with the Classictone (18031) 15w. It has 5k and 8k primary available so which should be used for the 600?

The more important question; the blue wire on the Classictone is noted as COM. Does that blue wire match the stock wire color and go to J3? Assuming the black wire on the secondary goes to J6, correct? If I get these sorted I can figure out the rest! :D

thanks in advance,
Robert

I think the 8K tap is likely for a pair of 6V6's operating in class AB configuration.

The Fender Champion 600 is a single ended Class A amp with a single 6V6 output tube. The pre is a 12AX7 if that helps. Would the 8k primary get the 600 more in line with a vintage tweed?

Robert

I may have bigger problems or wired the output transformer wrong. Fired up the 600 with the volume at 1 and there was a loud hum. This also smoked resistors R15 and R16 so replacing those now. Thought I was careful to label the green wires for J9 and J10 when I removed the circuit board. Is there a way to determine which is which now?

Is there some continuity checking in order?

You're not hearing me.

The plate-to-plate impedance for a pair of 6V6GTA's such as found in a 5E3 or a 6G2 is approximately 8K ohms.

Your tranny is intended for a number of different applications besides a simple class A amp.

It doesn't matter which of the green wires go to J9 and J10, they can be reversed with no problem. I'd say that you wired the power transformer incorrectly, likely to the wrong terminals. Didn't the F2, 4 amp fuse blow? You can check continuity for each colored pair of wires, but no guarantee that the power transformer didn't short.

Don't know why you want to replace the OT unless it is defective. As far as the PT is concerned, why did you disconnect it? None of the mods I described in my thread required the removal of either the OT or PT. In fact, I didn't even remove the PCB to make any of my mods.

I know that I've had my fair share of; "Why in the heck did I do that?" moments.

This statement was in the very first post of my thread:

"I should note that it was not necessary to remove the main PCB from the chassis to do any of the circuit mods. The component mounting holes are plated through, so it was easy to unsolder/solder components from the top side of the board."

Thanks for the clarification on the Green J9 & J10 wiring! The F2 fuse is still intact.

My wife asks me why I do a lot things. My usual response is "It seemed like a good idea at the time.".

Understand you didn't remove the PCB board in your mod. I removed the PCB and the connectors to replace the OT.

That ranks right up there with "Watch what happens when I do this!"

They both make excellent epitaphs.

sanctuary,

Keep at it, and keep us informed of your progress. I'm hoping that you can replace the resistors, repair any damaged traces, and figure out what connections were wrong. If you post a picture of your transformer connections (before powering up again) maybe we can spot any errors. Since those particular resistors were smoked, you might have also damaged either or both of your tubes' filaments. Definitely worth checking both tubes before proceeding. It's a good idea to remove both tubes before powering up and check voltages before trying with tubes installed.

It's great that you are practicing on such an inexpensive amp. The lessons learned will be valuable and hard to forget. Fire and smoke are great reminders of what not to do.
