My Hot Rod Deluxe just started crackling (its not a constant noise it is intermittent). It happens when plugged into 1 or 2, mostly when it is turned up or in drive or more drive mode. it does not happen when its on standby, it does not matter if the guitar is plugged in or not, and it does not happen when i plug directly into the power amp in?

Most obvious is the preamp tubes, but no noise when i "tap" the tubes.

any ideas?

thanks

Cold solder joint, fractured trace on one of the PCB's, or a ribbon cable not fully seated in its connector socket.

Hi keithg13,

Good advice from Retroverbial for things to check, although the ribbon cables are soldered in, no connector sockets.

The fact that you have no noise when plugged into the Power Amp In indicates that it is definitely in the preamp section, and even though tapping on the tubes doesn't affect the noise, I would still suspect one or both of the preamp tubes, V1 or V2. The most common source for this kind of noise is a bad preamp tube. Try a new tube in V1, if you still have the noise, replace the original tube and try the new tube in V2.

It was the origine of the noise on my BDRI (V2) even if it could be solder joint as Retro adviced.
