Just got the HRD III and a few questions-

1. Does anybody have a tube layout for it? I can't seem to find one.

2. What runs through V1, V2, and V3?

3. If I am looking at the back of the amp, is V1 the left, V2 the center, and V3 the right?

Thanks!

Here's the schematic for the basic HRD model......

http://web.archive.org/web/200612311918 ... deluxe.pdf

The tube layout should be common for the "III" version.

V1A and V1B are -- respectively -- the first and second gain stages. V2A and V2B each provide additional saturation for the "drive" and "more drive" modes. Both halves of V3 perform as the phase inverter.

Dammit! I typed this up before seeing Retroverbial's post, so I am posting anyway. :P

No tube layout. Looking at the back of the amp, start on the right and count toward the left. V1, V2 are preamp tubes, V3 is the phase-inverter (PI), V4 and V5 are output tubes. Preamp and PI tubes have two halves each.

Both halves of V1, and half of V2, are used for all channel selections. The other half of V2 is added only for the drive/more drive channel, so V2 will have a greater impact on only the drive/more drive channel. V1 will have the greatest affect on the overall tone for all channels. V3 will affect the headroom/breakup of the output tubes, so a lower gain tube such as a 12AT7 in V3 will give more clean headroom. Of course both halves of the V3 tube, and output tubes are used for all channels.

If it helps, here is the schematic for the III.

OK so, if you are looking, say, to calm down the volume of the clean channel a bit, that would be V1?

Thanks guys!

Yes, and a good quality 5751 in that position works quite well for that purpose. Don't forget, input 2 is attenuated, use that input for less overall volume also.

+1

You might also try a 12AT7 in the V3 position -- as a stand-alone swap, or in conjunction with shimmilou's recommendation.

Good point on using input 2 particularly if you are using Humbuckers.
