Yes, I can see the new thread now.....

"Well, I got my old Champ back and used the same tubes that I had in the C600, and I still have the buzz. I can't figure this out."

Shimmy, good to get a chuckle on a Sunday!

Reminds me of the time (Oh No... not one of those "Reminds me stories")... a guy had a problem with constant hellacious noise from his amp. Ends up he plugged a 6L6GC into the rectifier socket. Goes to show you a Beam Tetrode can work as a diode --- well, kinda. And RCA make tough tubes.

Come on, guys. The OP hasn't had a chance to get some new tubes yet. Everything he is doing to try and solve the problem is logical. It could be the tubes, or it could just be a dud amp. Does happen, ya know.

That is a good one BMW2002Ti! I am surprised that the screen grid in the 6L6 lasted more than a few seconds.

Yes, RCA made some very tough tubes. I remember seeing banks of them running red-plated for days, and still tested/functioned just fine afterwards.

True bluesky636, but now he has introduced yet another problem (probably chassis vibrating). Seems even more logical to try the simplest and most likely thing first (tubes), before trying to rebuild the amp. I think this is why they don't let engineers go on service calls, well, because they will try to re-engineer the damn thing instead of just fixing it. Just razzin' ya man. :P

Indeed, I am the OP (original poster...?) and things are getting funny.

As for the warranty...again not too worried...$169 Canadian out the door for what is basically a toy. My playing ability is far, far less than my ability to be criticial of small buzzes and crackles (I too am an engineer, although the road and sewer type, not electrical) I had more fun and enjoyment from poking around in the box than I will every get from my playing. I learned a lot and will attempt all the suggestions, starting with a return to the vendor and no mention of the Phillip's head screw driver!

rflindall, why don't you just take it back before you void the warranty?

+1

...get a new replacement and possibly have no problems afterward instead of messing about and possibly voiding the warranty.

Took it back to the vendor this morning. The Amplifier technician was on vacation, but the guitar tech and I both tested it against two other Champion 600's that were in the store. All three had the exact same hum and buzz and all of them crackled at high volume in the lower register. They were played with a variety of single coil and humbuckers and no difference was found i.e. all three were buzzy and crackly at the higher volume. So...no use trading-in for the same amp. Not suprising though, it was suggest that I try the Pro Junior, which was very nice but came it around $499.

I might have the Amp tech look it over and swap the tubes next week, but for now I am convinced it is just the nature of the small amp. Maybe I should just feel lucky to get that "vintage" sound right out of the box

Thanks to everyone who took the time to comment.

Well I would bring it back next week as you mentioned, anyway.
Could be a bad batch of amps too.

Now you say it's a hum after all?

Had you said that in the first place, I could have told you that both of mine have a little 60/120 Hz hum and it is normal. You can't hear the hum at all once you start playing.

I have the feeling that your description of "crackling" is probably the speaker and grill cloth farting, considering that it happens at higher volume, also normal for the cheap speaker and "drum-like" grill "cloth". Using the other input helps with this, but the amp really needs a better speaker and/or grill cloth.

Kind of like going to LA via Omaha.

I mentioned both the hum (as expected for the tube amp) and a hiss or buzz. The hiss is most noticeable at the higher volumes on the amp i.e 7+ with crackling and hiss starting at 8+. Both are evident when the amp is just sitting there with no instrument plugged in. I should try to record it somehow.

I found this url on Youtube, and it sounds pretty much like mine. lots of hiss at 12, and cleaner at lower volumes.

And...as I mentioned two other Champion 600's at the same store sounded exactly the same. Maybe that's just the way they are.

BTW, I love this clip also, because the big guy waited all day to unpack his new amp. Priceless.

So basically, I think I need to dial it back to 6'ish to avoid the hiss, and possibly invest in some better tubes and a better speaker at some point.

Ok, this is just a suggestion. But, a cheap one. Buy a good contact cleaner-- like Caig Deoxit D5. Pull each tube and spray a little into each socket. Then, insert and remove each tube from the socket, carefully a couple of times--- to clean the pins' contacts.

Do the same for any ribbon cable connectors, jacks, plugs, wherever there is a male and female plug and jack type thingee.

Work the surface clean, by doing the old in-&-out (with each connection... ) a couple of times.

This may help the noise issue. In my experience, the darn contact cleaner has helped "solve" quite a few issues. Keep the Caig Dexoit handy. It's good for all hinky electric contacts. Guitar amp or not guitar amp. Like switch contacts and battery contacts (like TV remotes that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't --- even with new batteries --- just a dab on the battery contacts does the job).

Good luck. I hope this suggestion works.

I have to say, but I heard nothing in either of those two videos that sounds unusual or bad. Sounds just like every other Champ 600 I have heard either live or on You Tube. If you notice, the charater of the hum and hiss changes in relation to the position of the amp and guitar to each other. The player is standing close to the amp which is going to result in an interaction between the guitar pickups and the amp. Here is mine that I recorded while I was in the process of modding it. There is an explanation of the settings on the page. Excuse my crappy playing.
