I'm considering hooking my reverb amp to a speaker cab (haven't got the cab yet). The question is whether to unplug the internal speaker from the rear jack when I plug in the cab, or to run both external and internal speakers together. The cab only has a 8 ohm hook-up, and since the external speaker jack in the back of the amp is a parallel 8 ohm out, I know the load will drop to 4 ohm...and I'm not sure how this will affect the sound quality. I have my amp in a rack in my home, so pulling it out to change the speaker plugs can be a slight inconvenience. Thoughts??

It shouldn't be any more inconvenient than switching the amp on and off. And if so, then build yourself a user-friendly patch panel for speaker swaps.

The amp was made to use either the internal 8-ohm speaker by itself, or both the internal 8-ohm speaker plus an external 8-ohm speaker simultaneously. That is why an external jack is provided. A 4-ohm total speaker load is perfectly fine for the DRRI. Compare the sound for yourself to see if you like both speakers at once, or if you prefer only one speaker.

Party on Garth!

Thank you for your feedback. I agree that the switches pose the same issue, but at least with them it is a simple vertical up and down movement, whereas the jack is horizontal and if I drop the plug...well I have to pull the amp out to get to it... I don't I'm whining. Even though I knew that I would have to listen to the tonal quality of the internal being plugged or not plugged, I was canvasing input to gauge what other's had experienced. Again, thank you.

None of the OEM speakers used in the re-issue Deluxe Reverb amp are anything to write home about -- just about any aftermarket alternative will be a significant improvement.

I've read that on a number of post. I know that when I kick the volume of a little pass 5, the mids begin dropping a little and the tonal quality starts getting a little shaky. I'm considering swapping the Jensen out with an Eminence. I haven't locked on as to either the patriot or red coat series yet. Thoughts?

It depends upon the tone you're looking for.

I don't have any personal experience with the Red Coat series but the Swamp Thang yields a versatile modern rock voicing and the Texas Heat puts out some really ballsy growl. Both speakers work their best with the amp's "mojo" and "vibe" controls dimed.

A lot of people have taken the Jensen C12k out to try another speaker only to put the C12k back in because they liked it better. The C12k does sound better after break in.

Thanks Rockerduck. When I first heard of speaker break in..I remember saying "really". So I had to check it, and learnt the it was indeed true. Who would think that a magnet, fabric and some copper would have to "break in" over time with use. Thanks for the info about people putting them back in...hadn't heard that.
