I play (classic rocker here) a Parker Fly through a PODxt Live into a Hot Rod Deluxe III. Love everything about my rig except.......I get tremendous gain. Too much gain. No clipping, but I plug into the 2nd input of the amp because the amp is so loud. I used a Marshall VS265R prior to this with no difficulties. But this little HRIII is LOUD.

Now, I'm no prude when it comes to volume, but I play this amp on "2", and the volume knob is extremely sensitive. Bump it either way just a touch and it is too quiet, or it's ear-bleedingly loud.

I am using the lowest settings on the POD. And again, everything was fine with the Marshall.

Any suggestions on how to reduce the output of this amp? The knob is just too sensitive.

If you are just using the amp clean (no drive/more drive), you can put a 12AY7 or 5751 in V1 which will drop the overall gain and make the clean volume more useable. Keep in mind that it will affect the drive/more drive sound also. If you need to drop the gain even more, put a 5751 or 12AT7 in V3.

Sweet. I am using the amp clean and generating all of my voicings from the pod. Much appreciate the tip!

Good luck. I did the same thing with my Blues Deluxe Reissue. The two best sounding combinations were:

V1 = NOS JAN 5751
V2 = JJ 12AX7
V3 = JJ 12AT7
V4/5 = JJ 6L6GC

or

V1 = NOS JAN 12AY7
V2 = JJ 12AX7
V3 = JJ 12AX7
V4/5 = JJ 6L6GC

I settled on the second one. Over all gain is about the same (I can play at home anywhere from 4 to 6 on teh clean volume without deafining myself). Tone is similar. The first one had a little tighter bass, but the second sounded "Bluesier". :D

Also, make sure the amp is biased properly. Fender biases them too cold.

Have you tried running the POD into the effects return jack instead of the guitar in jack?

You might be able to better control the volume from your POD that way...or maybe not, but it's easy to try.

Good idea George, I'll try that this weekend!

And Bluesky, I just ordered tubes!

One way or another (always liked that Blondie song), hopefully I'll get this dialed in better!

Thanks guys!

I'm another huge fan of the NOS Jan Phillips 5751. I use it in V1 of my Egnater Rebel 20 and it did a fine job of taming the gain.

I found that I don't have an effects return jack on the HRDIII.

Also, there are three 12ax7 tubes.....how do I know which one is V1, V2 & V3?

The effects "send" is the "Preamp Out", and the effects "return" is the "Power Amp In" for the HRDlx.

Looking at the back of the amp, from the right, counting to the left, V1 and V2 are preamp tubes, V3 is the phase-inverter, V4 and V5 are output tubes.

When i played with a Pod I had the BEST luck with the power amp in jack option...it allowed for the best control of sound and was way less shrill. Just remember to have your Pods volume pot turned down to 0 when you first plug it in and play and slowly turn up from there. The POD will now be the volume control and overall tone control for your amp as you have bypassed your amp's controls and are simply using the HRDLX as a power amp.

Thanks for all the tips folks!

Here's what I ended up with:

V1 = 12AT7
V2 = 12AU7
V3 = 12AU7

My tube source didn't have AYs, so I decided to try this combo. Before, my amp volume would be set at "2", but was extremely touchy.....move it just smidge and it was either way too quiet or way too loud. Now, I play it on "3", but the amp is much smoother with regards to volume. We have band practice tonight, so it'll get the complete workout then.

I appreciate the suggestions.
