I just bought a new BJ III. I also own a DRRI that I love, it's just getting to heavy to lug up and down my stairs. I got the BJ to keep downstairs. I noticed right away the shrilling ice pick tone of this amp. I tried all sorts of different settings. Then went the tube route. I have a large collection of JAN NOS tubes, and first tried the NOS GE power tubes with Mullard per-amp, no help. Changed per-amps to Tung-Sols, still real ice picky. I can't be the only person to notice the very high shrill tone. I see in the soon to be released BJ special brown edition, it comes with a Jensen Alnico speaker, which I'm told really warms it up. Any thoughts on this? I have a nice broken in 1960 Jensen P12Q I'm thinking of putting it in to see if it tames it down, but wanted to see if anybody had other ideas/suggestions as well. Any help would be awesome.

Maybe it's the new "sparkle" mod, introduced on the III.

Try the P12Q.

If it's equipped with a bell cover over the magnet structure, you may have to remove it for sufficient clearance between the speaker and the chassis.

Ya, it's the "sparkle" for sure. I ordered the Billm mod kit after Bill's advice and I'll also put my p12Q in. I might even try the Swamp Thing that Bill suggests for the speaker.

Let you know how it goes!

I put a c.rex in mine & it helped a lot with the ice pick & overall tone. I also have a cr in my drri &it sounds great as welll & cured the fizzyness & buzzness with od petals. I did not like the jensen p12q in either amp.

I like the P12Q in my DRRI ok, but did out a C Rex in and it sounded zoo much better that I'm going to get another one for my BJ III. Thanks for the confirmation

Put the P12Q in and it really tamed it down! I'll still do the BillM mods to squeeze a bit more out, and I might even try a C-Rex. But just the P12Q only made a BIG difference. Those new "Special Design" speakers are something different, thats for sure!

I replace a lot of those in my clients' new and near-new amps......

I've got a C-Rex in mine. That speaker hasn't made a shrill tone yet and it's not even broken in yet.
