Hi Everyone.

I am new member and beginner guitarist. I picked up a Champion 600 from a pawnshop for $100 CAN. about 6 months. Swapped tubes for EH's and the spk for a weber. Sounded great.
But after transporting it to a friends all I could get out of it is a crackling , harsh noise when the guitar is strummed. No sound out of it otherwise. I have replaced the tubes with the stock ones and tried a different spk, but the issue still remains.
I have not done the tone pot mod yet, but was gonna to, the only thing holding me up was trying to find a small piece of 1/8' AAA white birch plywood.
I was wondering if doing the mod this may resolve the issue as i read that a cap or resistor may have come loose on the board?
Any info or advice would be most welcome.

As long as the tubes are tight in their sockets, It could just be a cold or fractured solder joint. I'd start looking at the board around the tube sockets.

GeeZee,

Welcome to board. May wanna take a good look at the input jack. Wooden chopstick test maybe able to locate the bad part or connection.

I'd be curious as to how you "transported" the amp to your friends. I have had mine in and out of its cabinet, taken it apart and put it back together multiple times. There are very few parts inside and the construction is very good. Solder pads are all plated through and I have never seen a loose component.

Until you find out what the problem is, doing any mods to the amp is a waste of your time, but when you are ready, read my thread here:

Sounds like the transportation may have broken an etch.

If you are good with a soldering iron, I'd discharge all caps and then look for bad /broken connections on the pcb.

Have you tried a "jiggle" test with the input jacks and/or controls to see if the sound comes back?

No mods should be done until you have fixed this issue first.

Well here it is a year later. I parked the champ in the closet last year and not have pulled it out till just recently. I tried all the tests that were mentioned, to no avail. Finally I found a good tech. He found a short on the power tube socket which blew the tube , a resistor, & the OT. :(
After spending so much time and a bit of money. I decided to go all out and do the mercury mod. I will doing the mod myself and what i can't handle the tech will do.
I'll post some pics when its done. I have changed the grill cloth but not the baffle board yet , still looking for some 1/8 white birch plywood. Lumberyard wants me to buy a whole sheet. :(

BTW, thankx to everyone who replied.
