...on the drive channel only. Rotating the bass control counterclockwise filters it out. I've been through it , checked power supply DC voltages, all of the series de-coupling caps between the preamp stages (no DC is getting past them), tubes are OK (have tried new ones), and I'm "thinking", maybe try replacing the Power supply filter caps. The problem doesn't seem to affect the clean channel, but I'm suspecting that maybe it's there at a low level, and it takes the additional gain stages being engaged before it becomes audible. It also does seem to change frequency as I move the drive control. Do the power supply filter caps seem like a reasonable place to start ? They do show a very small amount of dried fluid on one end. Just a tad. Any other suggestions ? There's no significant AC running around on the filter caps until I rotate the Drive and Bass. At that point I can measure some AC voltage (that increases with the level of the motor boat sound) on the filter caps themselves. I'm suspecting someone else with a Hot Rod Deluxe has had this problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated. And yes, I know there's voltages that can kill me, discharge the caps, etc. :).

Thanks in advance.

New filter capacitors (3x 22uF 500V, and 1 x 47uF 500V) took totally care of it. Don't let the fact that it is occurring only in the Drive channel fool you. 25.00 worth of capacitors and I'm back in business. Hope this helps someone else.

Right on ! I have just come to the exact same conclusions based on the exact same observations and symptoms as you have experienced and published here on your amp. Your post has totally confirmed my suspicions! I know that this post is very old but wherever you are..... thank you for following through and publishing your post to the final conclusion and taking the time to write and tell about your findings. Especially given that you had no other participation but yourself! Thanks bro!
I wish more of the people who come online asking for a fix would have the courtesy to publish their final outcome, even if their project ends up in the fireplace. I've followed too many threads like a soap opera, that go on and on with many contributors troubleshootin a problem and suddenly the O.P. disapears and we all are left hanging, did it work or not?

Agreed.

Thankfully this melodrama had a happy ending and the OP took the time to post the results. As well, the forum's search engine can be a useful tool to ferret out info when someone has a similar issue with a specific amp. The right key-word is all it takes.

Rawk on, SS!

NO DOUBT!
Use the search function and spend a little time doing some research before just joining a forum and without even reading up a bit and getting a feel for the general social flow and collective wisdom of those you seek knowledge from... Don't immediately post with a question "I want?" "I need to know?" How do I? I want to fix my (*****) amp, but I am too lazy to read every other post that already went through how to
When you post your question it will clutter up the search results and bury the long thread that already goes through in great detail about everything you already really want to know!
But than again who the hell am I to speak about such etiquette, as I jump on this soapbox hijacking an otherwise fine thread that is so old  !!!
Well its past midnight and I gotta recap this amp. Damn if all I got is 450 v 22uF caps unless I use some older Spraques pulled from another amp because my brother wanted to change em out just because it was the thing to do..... I guess I am going to be reforming some old spraques that were probably fine but definately over 15 yrs old! I am more confident with the old Spraques than these new 450v chinese caps! Damn if I only have a dual section 50uF to replace the 47uF too! Man why cant Radio Shack sell filter caps? Man why cant anywhere sell filter caps other than online? I live in So Cal and not any of the electronic retailers can you walk up and buy 500v caps like we use! Damn it! I dont wanna wait. This is going to look stoopid with the dual section glued in and hardwired! Expensive too! I need to quit wasting time and stop hijacking this thread!
I wonder what those other empty unpopulated capacitor spots are there for??? Lo.L. Yawnnnnn, I tired! Wonder if I should start a new thread on the empty cap locations? Good night!

IIRC, some of that amp's architecture is shared with the Blues Deluxe -- it's possible that those unused pads and traces are for something the BDlx has but the HRDlx lacks.

The "good ol' days" are gone. Pretty much it's now only the on-line retailers who stock the stuff we need.

:(

No mystery.

Actually, those empty spaces are for the Hot Rod Deville power supply which uses a different cap configuration than the Hot Rod Deluxe does.

THANK YOU FOR THIS. Mine Deville started doing this today. Is there someplace where I can see which caps have gone bung?
