Someone please tell me if my 65 deluxe reverb ri has a problem or if it is just the way it is designed...I play with overdrive pedals through my deluxe reverb in the normal channel with no problem. Everything sounds fine, real smooth. Ever since I got the amp I have not been able to plug any overdrive pedals into the vibrato channel, which would be the channel with more 'sparkle' and of course reverb and vibrato. When I put an overdrive into this channel it goes real real real fuzzy and bad sounding...unlike the normal channel. It sounds fine if I just play it clean and it sounds fine with any other modulation or delay effects.

Do I need to have my amp looked at or is that just the way it is designed?

Are you playing with OD, reverb, and vibrato all on at the same time? If so, turn reverb and vibrato off, just leaving the OD on and listen to what it sounds like. Then add reverb by itself with OD, and listen, then repeat with OD/vibrato, and finally OD/reverb/vibrato. Since you say the vibrato channel sounds OK by itself, I bet one of those combinations with OD will sound bad indicating that your OD does not play well with one or both of those other effects.

Alright, I tried it again. I was sure to turn off the reverb and vibrato on the amp and played with just the overdrive pedal alone. I still get the fuzzy sound. It was pointless, but I also tried it again turning the reverb and vibrato on with it separate and together and get the same result. Seems like all combinations I still get the same result.

Good news though, I tried another overdrive pedal and it wasn't quite as bad. It still sounded as if it wanted to get fuzzy. Any other ideas? Should I go ahead and have it serviced and have a tech take a good look at it? I've had it a couple of years and never had it serviced.

I'm sorry. I get real heartburn from people that come here saying that they have a problem and need help. I/we try to help them, only to find out that the problem has been going on for a long time or the amp has never been looked at in years. At this point it could be anything from bad tubes to a bad OD pedal. Take it to a tech and have the amp checked out.

It might also be that the amp's "mojo" and "vibe" controls are set too high......

I have this same problem with several pedals most obviously with fuzzes. It happens with certain other overdrives too. I get it in both channels but it's less a problem in the Normal channel. I just think that there are some pedals that don't work that well with these amps. Turning the amp up and it is also less pronounced. It disappears under the sound of the guitar (sort of).

Edit: I have read that changing the speaker can help. It seems to me that the most used replacement speakers for a DRRI are the Cannibis Rex or the Weber 12F150. I'm going to try one of those.

jrfurr001,
I experienced the same problem with my new deluxe reverb reissue.
In my opinion there are 3 options:
1. Change your speaker to one that better tolerates OD petals. You may find this also results in a nicer clean sound as well, as I did, in the end.
2. finding an OD petal that works with the stock DRRI Jensen c12k speaker & doesnt cause buzzing. In my opinion it is the: fulltone fulldrive 2, or boss sd-1 (if on a budget) after triing 6-7 Od petals.
3. Dont use OD petals & crank your amp over 5-6 or more, & get a natural awesome break up- which these OD petals try to simulate.
After jerking around for while I found replacing the speaker with the cannibus Rex & adj.ing the bias resulted in a awesome sounding amp. It sounds nicer clean & its tolerant to any OD petal & I can play at lower volumes.
hope this helps

I recently bought a DRRI and experienced the exact same issue:
alot of people say that you need to cut the bright cap, or that you need to mod the amp...

Luckily i feel i have resolved the issue for my needs - without having to mod the amp.

if your anything like me, you enjoy the bright channel - its the reason you bought the amp in the amp in the 1st place! and you enjoy having the different normal channel tones too!

my solution was to leave the amp stock, but to change what pedals and cables i was using. I used to own a proco rat 2, a visual sounds route 66... but they sounded like balls with the DRRI...

I now own a Skreddy Screwdriver mini deluxe (overdrive), a Mad Professor little green wonder (TS style), and a Throbak Overdrive Boost (clean boost + germanium AND silicon fuzz)... all of which sound perfect on my DRRI...

yes these pedals are more expensive boutiquey stuff... but the results are night and day - i truly recommend finding these pedals... and testing them with your amp - they really bring out the best in your amp... especially the mad prof and the throbak... they are soo open and dynamic... its just a massive relief

goodluck

With many new Fender amps, this alone will often result in better overall sound, as the bias is usually cold from the factory. Consider that there is an extra gain stage in the vibrato channel that might also contribute to different sound with some pedals.

+1

I recall a situation some years back with a friend's SRRI. The amp simply sounded like crap when using time-based effects, but only through the vibrato channel. I recommended swapping out the V4 recovery tube (a 12AX7) for a more mellow 5751 which tamed the post-reverb gain down just enough to reduce unwanted IM distortion caused by the owner's phaser/flanger/chorus pedal from over-saturating the phase-inverter stage.

Might be a similar phenomenon in this case as well.
