I just got a Bassman 250/210. It has quite a few settings on it that I'm not familiar with. I usually just play around the house by myself or with music CD's. Sometimes I "jam" with some other guys, nothing in clubs or gigs. I'm wondering what some of the settings on the amp would be sufficient for my playing.
How to set the master and volume?
Compressor and contour settings?
Room balance?
I don't know for sure what the mid EQ is. There seems to be 4 controls for mids?
Sorry for the questions. I have read the manual but it doesn't really explain much as for as settings go. It's not lack of info in the manual, it's lack of understanding the functions on my part.
I usually play classic rock and country. I used to have an Ampeg BA-115 and my settings were flat on the EQ, about 3/4 on the lows, and the mid and treble was around 6. So basically the bass was 8-9, mid and hi on 6.
That's the sound I'm used to.
Thanks.

:D :D I have a couple of 250/115's. The speakers are different but the controls are the same. You are right, the instructions are realy vague so here's the scoop. PREAMP on the left side, start at half way and watch the clip light next to the control. You want the light to come on a nice strong yellow when you hit a string. Adjust up or down untill you find a point where the light comes on without it changing to red ( clipping not good )when you play fairly hard. Master on the right controls overall vol;ume of the amp. If your in a situation where your volume is up and the clip light for the master comes on, turn down the preamp volume a little bit ( clipping not good here either ). Compressor: this is a hard control to set. This control will smooth out finger playing. Start playing a chart and adjust the control up. You won't realy hear a differance but you will feel that you have more control over our bass. Contour: the farther yuo turn this up the more your mid's will come out. Good for modern alt rock etc. Room balance: a very nice control if you play out like i do anyplace frome a small bar to a theater. Center is nuetral . If you are playing a brite rooom with wood floors, bare walls, nthing to realy absorb sound you can turn to the left for a deeper sound. Lots of rugs, drapes or other sound deadening material turn to the right to get more attack in the sound. Eq: bass is bass, treble is treble. The center contols will cover the sound on your A ans D strings. You can adjust the controls so that you get an even sound comming from all four strings. If this still sounds confusing let me know in the forum and i will try and help.

So when I want to play, say at home, not loud, what should be my 1st step. Scenario: the volume on my bass, the volume control on the amp, and the master control on the amp are all turned off. Btw, thanks for helping me.

:D ok. Fist off turn the volume on your bass up to about 3/4s. This wil give you a god starting place for your bass setting without causing distortion from too high a setting.
Next turn up the master volume to a comfortable level. Now you can turn up the gain control on the left. You want to play while your adjusting this to watch your level. As you turn the gain up , when you play the yellow light next to the control will lite up. Keep turning up untill the light is brightly lit when you first hit the strings without the light turning red. If you get a red light just turn the control down a touch. After you get the gain set properly you won't need to change the settings on your bass or the gain when you play. Just change the master volume louder or softer as needed. Just one tip. If you'r playing at high volume and you see the clip lite come on you can fix that by turning the gain down a little until the light stops coming on when you play. Turn the gain back up when you bring the volume down again. Hope this helps. The amp seems complicated but once you get the settings the way you lke them you won't have to change anything except the master volume.

OK, I'll have to try it that way.
Last night I had the bass volume down, turned the volume(gain)to about 2 or 3 0'clock and hit a bass string with no volume(on the bass). The yellow light lit up. Each time I hit a string it lit up. Next I turned the bass's volume up to about 3/4 and turned the master to about 8 o'clock or (2). Each time I hit a note the yellow light lit up.

:D glad i helped. just remember if yuo turn up your bass volume for more sustain, you will need to turn the amp gain down to keep from clipping the preamp. to simplify things i have adjusted both my 250's so that the three basses i preform with and the preamps are set to work at any level the master volume is at. example: the preamp is set at 12 o'clock, my basses are set @ 3/4 volume and i can set the master low for home or crank it to 11 for shows. just gotta play with the settings.

The "compressor" control is supposed to help you have more control over the bass. Do you know how this control is supposed to work? The more you turn it up, the more control? How did you set yours and what do you usually keep it on? I'm not quite clear on how to set it. Thanks again.

:D DJ, the compressor contol is hard to explain. Mine is set at half way. The compressor is more of a feeling than it is a sound. If you use your fingers to play half way wiil be good. If you use a pick most of the time turn the compressor down to the 9 o'clock postition. These should work well for you.
