Hi!
Just bought me a great little big amp, Fender Excelsior... it IS a great amp. Been playing around with it for a couple of days now, different guitars, different input jacks loud and silent... WOW!
Yesterday I found it was pretty easy to use an external speaker with this Excelsior and it sounded SO good in 4x12 cabinet. Now to the point...

I want to build a little box with jacks to make it fool proof (well, almost...) to use an Ext speaker

Here's my schematic... am I thinking right?

Image

J1 is connected with the tele plug from the speaker...
J2 is connected (with a small speaker cable I have to make) to the amp speaker jack.
J3 is a jack with a switch function so that the Excelsior will use the internal speaker if no external speaker is connected. The internal will be cut off when an external is used...

Have I got it right? :?:

My idea is to mount a small aluminum box with the jacks inside the Excelsior somewhere... short cables must be better, right? Less hum that way or?

Thankful for all kind of help I can get...

/ Sune

Looks right to me. (But not quite 'foolproof'...if the internal speaker and amp connections are accidentally reversed and an external cab is plugged, will you not end up with no load on the amp?) More foolproof would be to replace J2 w/ a spkr cable hardwired to the box and a male 1/4" plug on the other end.

You may want to ask some of the more "electronically experienced" that hang out on this forum if the Excelsior's PT will take both the internal and an external cab simultaneously without damage. If so, change J3 to a standard jack for the flexibility of one or both, or better yet just use a splitter.

Thanks for the comment!
You are right, replacing the J2 jack with hardwired speaker cable and a male plug is an excellent idea. But it it'll never be totally foolproof, but it seems to be a better solution than mine.
You're next comment am I a bit insecure about... if you use a standard jack... you have to have a plug in it or else the internal speaker will not be connected... but I may be wrong... help someone? The idea of having both internal and external speaker worker sounds good but then you have to think about the speaker resistance too, right?

If J3 is a standard jack, you have shown J1 in parallel w/ it, so either or both will function. Regardless, the external cab should be of the same impedance as the internal spkr. The question that remains is whether the Excelsior's OT can take the reduced impedance (of both spkrs simultaneously) and hopefully someone else on this forum may be able to address that. If it can, I'd just buy a common splitter from someone like Radio Shack. It has a male 1/4" plug going to two female 1/4" jacks.

No, J3 is not a standard mono telejack it has a switch (think it is called so) so that it will do something without a plug and something else with a connected plug... stupid explanation, you have to excuse me, English is not my first language...

What I was trying to say is "If J3 was changed to a standard jack....." Sorry for the confusion.
