ordered a '65 DRRI recently from american musical. scratch n dent model. only visible cosmetic was a tiny tear in vinyl inside on bottom. turned it on, played fine for a few days either channel.

turned it on yesterday and no sound from normal channel 1 & 2. sound comes from channel 2, 1 & 2 though.

just a straight guitar connection and no pedal switch.

unseated the tubes on the normal side and reseated them. all tubes glow red. still same issue.

what's the next things to check to see if i can fix this before packing it up to a fender service rep here?

Vi is only used for normal channel, V2 is only used for Vibrato channel. Swap V1 with V2 and see if the problem moves to the other channel. If so, then V1 is bad.

i'm not sure what to your reference is to V1 & V2 but i suspect V1 is the right most tube when facing amp from backside with that 3 tube set. there are 3 sets of tubes from what i see. 3 big ones on the left, 3 in middle, and 3 on right.

ok, i swapped V1 with a tube from middle set of tubes. they have the same part number. amp now is sounding on all inputs now! turned it off, wait awhile, then power back up. still sounds.

earlier, i removed three of them from the normal channel and reseated them and bam, nothing from that channel. go figure.

wow, thanks for the help.

As per the tube chart inside your amp's cabinet, the tubes are numbered from right to left, beginning with V1 and ending with V9.

Thus......

V1 -- the first and second gain stages of the "NORMAL" channel
V2 -- the first and second gain stages of the "VIBRATO" channel
V3 -- reverb driver
V4 -- reverb recovery
V5 -- tremolo oscillator
V6 -- phase inverter
V7 & V8 -- power tubes
V9 -- rectifier

This tube array is consistent for most vintage-type dual channel blackface Fender amps (and re-issues of same).

You beat me to it Retroverbial.

I'll just add that V3 and V6 are 12AT7, while V1, V2, V4, V5 are 12AX7. Generally only use the same tube type for exchanging. In particular, don't put a 12AX7 in V3 or V6.

If the problem reoccurs with the replacement tube in place, you might have another issue such as a loose connection, solder joint maybe.

i see the inside chart on the side, just lists the tubes model number relative to position. i take it "V" means "valve".

any ways, i swapped V1 & V4. there are the same model, 12AX7A/ECC83-S's so figured that was ok.

just reseating V1,V2,V3 didn't do anything.

update: this morning turned amp on and the vibrato channel doesn't sound just a consistent low tick tick sound comes through. normal channel played ok.

it must be that one tube, 12AX7A/ECC83-S(groove tube).

appreciate the info. i did use the same tube type by swapping V1 & V4. as you'll see in my new post, after amp sitting off during nite and powered back on today, now channel 2 isn't sounding except for the weird ticking sound but it isn't sounding my guitar at all.

so i'm thinking its that one tube? i emailed americanmusical and see what their tech says. hopefully its just this one tube and they'll send a new one.

thanks

Sounds correct to me, V4 would only affect the Vibrato channel. Half of the V4 tube is reverb recovery, and the other half is a gain stage for Vibrato channel.

appreciate the education. probably why that ticking sound is now spewing out on channel 2 with that faulty tube.

once i replace V1 with a new tube i'll post back here and wrap this thread up. might be beneficial for others.
