Search the forums. Connecting 2 amps has been covered extensively on how to do it.

As for tone and settings, adjust to your taste.

Ok, i have set up my amps. I got a Twin reverb and a Fender Blues Deluxe.

Got them two going, plugged in the guitar and bam. Did not sound as good as i expected.. It sounded like one was to low and when i got more volume on the one that was to low, is sounded to trebly.

I had this idea about having them two to run at the same time, one for clean and one for tube drive.
What are the basics of having 2 amps? Distance between them? Settings etc?

Do i have to have the both settings on both amps?

Would you recommend specific settings?

ALL help is appreciated, since i dont know anything about using 2 at once.

Thanks!
Mac

What ABY box did you end up buying?

The Radial one.. http://www.tonebone.com/re-bigshot-aby.htm

Sounds like you don't have the phase switch set properly.

Hi,

The Radial aby box is a good one. For the best tone there are two more expensive Radial options if you are willing to pay more.

I have one of each of these below. You have no volume or tone loss at all for the amps you play. I play in a 9 piece band, so two amps really help fill things out and leaves me with good options. One amp is always clean and the other amp I run my pedal board through it. On some songs I will use both amps at once or use one at a time. Make sure they are 180 degrees out of phase so there is no phase cancellation.

You can also use them as a channel switcher or combiner(Is that a word?). I've used it on my Fender Custom Vibrolux so that I can use 2 channels or combine the channels. I keep that in phase.

Here are links to both ot the two more expensive Radial Boxes:

Hope this helps

Bad advice. The speakers of both amps MUST BE IN PHASE with each other to avoid phase cancellation in the low frequencies. The phase switch setting on the ABY box may vary from amp to amp.

Bill,

I respectfully disagree. I'm not sure if you are talking about the amps speakers themselves or the box itself. The manual for the boxes talk about phase cancellation as you have said, but says it depends on the amps themselves. I have gigged with these boxes quote a bit and have found that when you turn the switch to "180" you have no phase cancellation in the lower frequencies, but when you don't have them switched on there is definite phase cancellation effect and loss of stereo imaging.

For the 9 piece, The rig setup indoors is a Princeton Reverb 2 or Fender Prosonic with a Deluxe reverb as amp number 2. Outdoors it's a 94 Twin amp and a Mesa Mesa Mark V as amp 2. I set the switch to "180"

The amplifier speakers must be in phase with each other in order to prevent phase cancellation. The phase switch on the box reverses the phase of one channel only. The fact that you have the box set to "180" means that the two amp's speakers were originally 180 degrees out of phase with each other. Setting the switch in your rig to 180 put the two speakers back into phase with each other.

In my rig (Fender BDRI and Weber 5F6A clone) the amp's speakers were already in phase with each other. Therefore, my ABY box is set to "0".

Telling someone to "Make sure they are 180 degrees out of phase so there is no phase cancellation" without knowing whether the speakers were originally in phase with each other is wrong. In order to make sure there is no phase cancellation between speakers you must try both phase switch settings to find the position which gives you maximum bass. What that setting ends up to be is irrelevant as it can vary from rig to rig.

Bill,

Ah, Sounds like we are meaning the same thing but I didn't expain it
correctly. The switch on the box will need to be switched to whatever setting that keeps the amps in phase. I' m sure my statement of making sure they are out of phase the "180" setting was misleading because that's how my rig is set. Thanks for
The clarification.

Carlos

You're welcome.

BTW, I have a EE degree and build amps. I'm a lousy guitar player, though.

I'm just surprised you can get away with 2 amps with a 9 piece band...

I'm in a 7 piece and that wouldn't work; it didn't work when we were a 6 piece. We're constantly chasing better tone with lower stage volume to have a better overall mix; I have my choice of Fenders for different venues and PA support that give me my cleans, and a pedalboard to add dirt, crunch, fuzz or anything in-between. At home, definitely using 2 amps for recording at once to 2 mic pre's to then have a verse amp, chorus amp, and both up for solos.

It's worked out for me pretty well with the 9 piece. Especially since we have 3 horns and you know how horns cut through. Our sound guy has done a real nice job of setting us up pretty well with our monitors set ups. I usually put both amps on "2". I use pedals to get overdrive. I play with a little jazz combo from time to time and will use 1 amp and that works well.

I play with a 9-piece ensemble occasionally and I always play two amps in tandem, using a Radial Big Shot to switch between them. Everything is miked so all of our instruments are balanced at the board then sent through the PA. This keeps the stage volume in check so nobody in the band goes deaf. The sole exception is our bass player (nobody in his right mind feels the need to mic a '77 SVT with two 8 x 10 cabs).
