I've been using a Kustom 30 watt amp, on it's clean (rhythm) channel, then using my Boss DS-1 distortion to get that Overdrive sound. I like playing clean, then using the pedal to go overdrive without having to change on the amp. My question being, is there any Fender amps (like the mustang, or the frontman, or whatever it's called) that can do the same thing? I tried it with A Line 6 spider IV, and it sounded horrible, as if there were a blanket were in front of it. Any suggestions on any Amps with that feature under $300 would be a help.

Just about all amps will do what you're looking for. The trick is finding the ones that you like the sound of.

go to a local guitar shop, ask to try amps, and if they sell the Boss DS1 (they usually do) ask if you can hook it up to try out the amp. If you like, great; if not, keep trying.

Amps, pedals, etc. are like colors - everyone has a favorite, but it may not be the same for everyone.

I'd try the new Fender Excelsior as a starting point. Fun 6V6 amp, 15" speaker.

Good luck.

It may also help if you post the musical style you're trying to get to.

You may also find as you start on this path that there are better pedals than the DS1 for some styles; overdrive pedals can be used to "hit" the preamp tubes harder with a higher level, which gets a different type of distortion than just cranking the "distortion" knob on a box.

Best bet though is to find a clean amp to base your tones on and then go from there.

Thanks for the info so far. The sound I usually go for is from classic rock, to hard rock, so sometimes even metal, I change the amount of distortion from the pedal. I'll have to look the that fender amp and see if I can find one around.
